The Cynic Project - September 7, 2001

    The Cynic Project
  • Q: Are you originally from Minneapolis, MN? Is that where you intend to make your home?
  • A: I was actually born in California, but raised in Stillwater, MN a small suburb of Minneapolis/St. Paul. I do enjoy the Minnesota spring and fall seasons, but I am undecided if I'm going to stay here for the rest of my life...

  • Q: Youre going to college in Minneapolis now - what is your major?
  • A: Computer Science

  • Q: You play the piano and double bass. Have you ever played the double bass on any of your music or do you always use digital equipment to produce the pounding bass lines?
  • A: Nope, nearly everything I've done (with the exception of a few vocal samples) has all been created digitally.

  • Q: When you first posted your music online what kind of response did you realistically expect to receive?
  • A: I really wasn't sure what to expect. I was too inexperienced to realize what I was or wasn't capable of.

  • Q: Was it the possibility of a lawsuit that prompted you to change the name of your first track on Mp3.com, "Matrix", to the new title "Grid"?
  • A: Nope, MP3.com was just being a bitch about that one. They cracked down on any name that could be deriving popularity from any popular culture event etc...Many songs were renamed because of that rule.

  • Q: Did you do anything to promote your music in the beginning or did it just take off all by itself?
  • A: Raymond Wave's remix of my Dream Formula was featured on the genre charts, which got us both quite a bit of publicity. I took advantage of this and promoted myself online as much as I could....luck took care of the rest.

  • Q: When did you realize that you had produced something that was not going to fade away?
  • A: I don't know if you could say that I've come to that realization yet :)

  • Q: Would you say that vacationing in Paris was the catalyst to your music career?
  • A: Yeah, thats where I 'discovered' trance, basically. I had listened to some misc. electronic music in the past, but nothing that had affected me the same as melodic trance. When I came home from that vacation, I went and downloaded some mp3s and was instantly inspired to create a band online.

  • Q: Do you consider yourself to be a cynic?
  • A: I'm a bit of a cynical person, but that really had nothing to do with the name 'The Cynic Project'.

    Dreamin' [Cynic Project Remix]
  • Q: What inspired you to do a remix of Return to Monos song "Dreamin"?
  • A: Interesting you ask this, what makes you think there was any inspiration besides RTM requesting that I do a remix :) hehe...actually I took up the project because of inspiration from Lange, one of the most respectable trance artists out there in my opinion. Lange does alot of remixes where he just takes female vocals, and then turns it into a completely different song. That's what I was trying to do with this track.

  • Q: Have you considered doing remixes for songs from other artists?
  • A: Yes, however I just haven't had the time. I am currently in production for another remix for Return to Mono.

  • Q: Have any companies contacted you about promoting their products (Alesis,Fruityloops, Yamaha, etc) or do you simply speak highly of them because they are genuinely good tools for musicians?
  • A: I'm not sponsored by any of these companies. I believe especially fruityloops and the Alesis QS6.1 are affordable, high quality tools for beginning musicians who don't just want to make 'beats', and thus recommend them to many people.

  • Q: Do you plan on making music your full-time career, after the success youve already garnered, or will you continue with college?
  • A: It's still up in the air, I suppose. I am currently taking one class at the U of M toward my degree, working part time at a local music software company, and spending the rest of my time producing and with my girlfriend. I haven't quite figured out what I want to do.

  • Q: You have a new track available only on your homepage called "Trans Symphony". Did Mp3.coms decision to suspend you (and a number of other artists) from the P4P program, citing "gaming" as the offense, influence that choice?
  • A: Yes. I am currently (still) in negotiations with MP3.com to reverse this decision and reinstate me in the p4p program.

    Trans Symphony (Demo)
  • Q: Are you still suspended from the P4P program or has that penalty been lifted?
  • A: As of September 6th, 2001, I am still suspended indefinitely, however I have another band that I post under: Trance Generation (http://www.mp3.com/trancegeneration) that is still earning p4p monies. I continue to post music there including the new Trans Symphony, which resides there now.

  • Q: Do you ever do any live appearances anywhere?
  • A: Not yet. I have purchased turntables and am working on a live set for sometime in the future...

  • Q: When you write a song do you start with the melody and work your way outwards or do you start with a bass line or rhythm?
  • A: I've done both. It depends what kind of mood I'm in, I suppose. Sometimes I just start with a really good bassline/hook, or sometimes I have previously written the melody on a piano and formed a song out of it, and I decide to make a trance track from that.

  • Q: What is the one hardware and/or software component of your recording studio that you simply couldnt live without now?
  • A: Although I don't even use it anymore, everything I am doing right now, I could do on the Alesis Qs6.1. It has probably been the most versitile piece of equipment I've ever owned. Currently, the Roland XV-3080 is the equipment I use the most, it accounts for about 50% of the sounds on my tracks.

  • Q: Did you do the artwork for your CD covers or did someone else?
  • A: I did the ones for Soundscapes Sampler and Sidewinder, using freeware ray-tracing software. The Soundscapes 2000 picture is an original work by a friend, Aaron Reiners.

    Trance Generation
  • Q: When can we expect to hear something new from you?
  • A: Soon. When it does get released, it will be on http://www.mp3.com/trancegeneration/, and not my official mp3.com cynic project site.
