Alex Bach - August 31, 2001

    Alex Bach
  • Q: You were born in Nice, France - what brought you to America?
  • A: My father was running from the law... I was very young... I don't remember the details.

  • Q: When did you first start writing music?
  • A: Sophomore year of college.

  • Q: Who are your influences musically?
  • A: For melodies: Johnny Mercer & Sarah McLachlan. For lyrics: Alana Davis & Fiona Apple. For vocals:Joni Mitchell & Jewel.

  • Q: What made you decide to put your music on Mp3.com?
  • A: It was the best music website that was popular world-wide and also user-friendly enough that a computer retard like me could navigate it!!

  • Q: In "Kaleidescope" you talk about "3 wishes" - If you had 3 wishes what would you ask for?
  • A: Well, let's see... a recording contract would be nice... Sometimes I wish I were two inches taller; and....... World Peace! (you did see Miss Congeniality, didn't you, Chris?)

  • Q: If you weren't a singer/songwriter what would your ideal job be?
  • A: I was actually headed for a career in International Business Law when I dropped out to become a musician.

  • Q: If you could trace your family tree back what famous person would you like to find there?
  • A: The genius who invented birth control. Oh wait-- if he were in my family, then maybe I wouldn't be here right now!!! Nevermind.

  • Q: Who did the string arrangement on "Hurricane"?
  • A: My handyman. He studied classical piano and violin at the Paris Conservatory of the Arts. He's also really good at plumbing.

  • Q: Have you ever been in a hurricane?
  • A: I wrote that song in the middle of Hurricane Floyd on Sept 13, 1999... My mother had begged me to stay inside, away from any windows, like a sensible person would do. But of course, I decided to venture through deserted streets and gale-force winds to reach my guitarist. When I got to his house, we wrote this song in 15 minutes.

  • Q: I saw that Maverick Records had posted to "Back The Band" on your page - what did you think about that?
  • A: My lawyer, Michael Toorock in Manhattan, will be more than happy to answer that question!

  • Q: Do you have an actual band yet or are they studio musicians on the album?
  • A: Yes.

  • Q: If your life were a reality-based show would it be best compared to The Real World, Survivor or Love Cruise?
  • A: Believe it or not, Chris, I gave my TV away when I was 15.

  • Q: Noticing your album title "Alex in Chains" I'm curious - do you like the band Alice in Chains?
  • A: No, but I like bondage...

  • Q: If you had to be "chained" with leg shackles to someone else for a day who would it be?
  • A: Well, I think it would be really interesting to be chained to Bill Gates for a day.... I've always wanted to know what it feels like to RULE THE UNIVERSE!

  • Q: Is anyone else in your family musically talented?
  • A: Yes, my father plays the kazoo, and my mother plays the stereo.

  • Q: If you had to use your last lifeline for the $1,000,000 question on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" who would you call?
  • A: I'd call Bill Gates and say, "Hey, do you remember that girl you were shackled to once....?"

  • Q: Do you have a motto/mantra?
  • A: "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I chose the one less travelled by; and THAT has made all the difference."

  • Q: What is your favorite song to perform?
  • A: "Fever" by Peggy Lee.

  • Q: Do you have any tour dates? If so where's your next stop?
  • A: No tour dates at the moment, but keep checking back. All my gigs are listed on the Calendar page.... www.mp3.com/alexbach

  • Q: What is your goal by the end of the year?
  • A: To get a recording contract and get on with the rest of my life!!
