Grandpa Greene

Grandpa was the father of my father and he stayed with us for a while. What I remember most was his beard, it was totally gray and so soft. I remember how I use to like to feel it. He was getting on in years when my brother and I came along. He had an old homemade chair with cowhide seat that he sat in most of the time. Both he and my grandmother had been married before and both had children, Grandpa four, three boys one girl, Grandma two, one boy one girl. Then they had two together my dad and his older brother. Anyway he went to live with his daughter and her family. She had a big one, about nine I think. We would go visit as often as we could. On the way to where they lived we would see a strange looking cow that my dad said was a water buffalo. I have always wondered about that, what was a water buffalo doing way out there like that. The house where they lived was back in some pine trees. I can still hear the sound the wind made blowing through them. In this house was a double fireplace. I can remember wondering how they did that. For some reason I was always amazed at that fireplace. When we went there to visit there were lots of kids to play with and lots of room to play. And I always loved seeing my grandpa. We had to sleep on the floor, which was a kind of treat for us kids. It was at this place that grandpa died. I remember the night. They kept turning him around because he couldn't get comfortable . After we were put on our pallets that night and were asleep he died, he was 89 I think. I was upset next morning when I woke up and he was gone. I will always remember how soft his beard was.
