The Chase
Once when I was a child my uncles were out putting the cows in the lot for the night. At that time they roamed free and your herd was marked by slits in their ears. Anyway there was a black cow my grandad had that would chase you. We all circled the cows to make them go in the lot and I was trying to help. The cow, Blackie by name, was stubborn, she wasn't ready to go in. She was looking for a way out and spotted me! When she started running my way I took off. The boys were on their own! I thought I was at a safe distance and I slowed down and looked around. She was still after me! I really started running then. My uncle said later that my white hair was sticking out like a flag in a high wind. I ran across a pile of old lumber full of nails and never touched one. How I will never know! I didn't stop that time till I was safe inside the house. It was a long time before I helped pen cows again. Anyway my grandad got rid of Blackie. He took her to market not long after that. Things like that you never forget as long as you live!
