Down to the River

Walking down to the river I start on the road through
the woods.  Walking very quietly and stepping softly on the leaves as I go.  Maybe I will see a deer.  Moving
a little farther I am at the picnic place.  I see a
squirrel scamper down a tree, throw up his bushy tail
and take off.  I  walk on to the river.  Its so low
you can see the logs there in the water that's been
there since years past when they floated timber down
the river.  I move on down river where the stream runs
in and step up on my tree.  I lay down on my tummy and
stack my hands to rest my head.  Looking in the stream
I see a young bullfrog headed out to the river.  I lay
upon the log for a while and listen to the water
rushing down. I almost go to sleep but before I do I
get up and start back.  I'm almost to the picnic area
and I hear an unexpected snort. Startled I look up in
time to see a doe run across the clearing and into the
woods.  I make it out of the woods and back up the
hill and home.
