I walk down the road through the woods. I can hear squirrels scamper about searching for acorns to store before the coming winter. As I near the edge of the water I can see the ripples as a trout moves to deeper water. As I sit on the river bank and look out over the water I can see leaves of gold, and dull green floating in the gentle current. I move on to my place of peace farther down the river. Soon I am there, I can hear the water pippling and bubbling over the tree roots in the stream. There is my tree across the stream and I climb on and lean against a limb. The skies are clear and blue today no clouds drifting by overhead. From the trees leaves of gold and brown sprinkle down and drift into the stream. I close my eyes and listen to the soothing sound of the water, my mind is absorbing the sound and the breeze gently blows through my hair as it blows away my worries of the day. I sit up and look down into the water, there is my reflection in the sparkles of the sun through the leaves. I see minnows swim in the sunlight in the water. So clear where the sun touches the water. I hear the squirrels scamper in the leaves. I look up slowly and across the river down stream I see a deer come for a drink, then another, soon there are three. They turn back into the woods. I rise and start my way back, the squirrels ignore me as I pass. Now i'm on the road again and I leave the woods behind but I am at peace with the day as I leave.
Its almost dawn. I hear the birds waking. I rise from my blanket and open the tent. The campfire still has coals and I make coffee. Soon coffee is ready and the sun starts to rise. I get a cup and walk down to the edge of the water. The sun is just peeping over the horizon. I wrap my hands around the warm cup and watch the sunrise. Colors of pink and gold start to appear. The mist is on teh river. I sit down near the waters edge to watch the sunrise through the mist. Soon I see the brightness of the day. I hear fish breaking water out in the river after insects floating on the water. The sun gets brighter and sparkles through the mist. I sit still as I sip my coffee and watch teh sunrise. Soon I see the birds skimming across the water for their morning drink. As the day gets brighter I see animals coming to the water's edge for morning drink. My coffee is getting cold but if I move it will frighten the animals away. So I sit and drink my coffee cold. There is a deer coming now. She looks back and I see a fawn approach. They come to water's edge and drink, then turn back into the forest. Now all the animals have had their drink and start to leave. Soon the riverbank is empty again. I rise and go to campfire for second cup. The beauty of what I have just seen forever on my mind. Now the other campers start to rise from their blankets and the silence of the morning is broken. But I will always have this picture to return to in my mind. |
