Amicolola Falls

If you have never been to Amicolola Falls in North Georgia, you have really missed a beautiful sight. About three years ago I had the chance to see it with my parents and dusty, my grandson. Its located off highway 52 up in the Chattahooche National Forest. When we turned off the main highway there were cars parked on both sides of the road. We were lucky enough to find a place closer. As we left the car we could see the beautiful falls flowing down over the rock layers in the side of the mountain. There's lots of people here enjoying the beauty as we are. There's a small pond at the bottom and a walkway around the pond and up the mountain side. There's benches all around and there are people in all of them. They must have been up the mountain already and needed a rest. There's one of those scopes there that you put a quarter in to get a closer view. I put in my quarterfor a look at the top. There's a bridge for walking across the top with people up there looking down. Dusty and I take the walkway to the back of the pond and start up the trail. My mom and dad follow only a little slower. The water is rushing down over the rocks and around trees on my left. The walkway is laid out with wood planks and small rocks for steps. The right side is protected from erosion with rocks and the forest itself. There's even an old car frame embedded in the mountain side. There are resting decks on the way up as the mountain gets steeper. I promise you are glad to rest after a bit. Theres a huge rock beside the trail and dusty climbs on for a picture. There are other people on the trail either going or returning. Some are sitting in the rest areas. I finally find an empty one and take a much needed rest, then start out again. This time we reach the top deck and still a good ways from the top. There are still people on the cross over bridge, but you can't get there from here. The sight of the falls is beautiful the way it flows down over the rock face. The sound of the water is so noisy you can't hear anyone speak unless they are close to your ear. I look down and watch the water tumble over the rocks downstream. I look back again at the hight still of the waterfall and the bridge. Thats where I want to be! After a bit we start back down much faster than the trip up. We get back to the bottom and the pond and I locate the trail to the bridge. No one wants to go with me so I go alone. Soon after I start up the trail I realize I made a mistake. I can't make it up this trail. My legs are too tired from the other climb. So unhappily I turn back and we leave soon after. There are rental cabins on the right beside the rushing water. Can you imagine sleeping in one of those cabins with the sound of the rushing water so close by? I can! Its my dream to hear it one night!
