Forest Sunlight

I get off work early and decide to walk to the river. Its cloudy but maybe the rain will hold off. I park the car and start out with a short backtrack. We have had a lot of much needed rain lately and the pasture has turned from dry, parched, brown grass to the sparkling green of an emerald. The grass smells alive again not the dead dry smell it had. To the right of me, my brother-in-law is having some land cleared and the smell of drying tree leaves hang in the moist air. The birds are quite happy with the new look. I make it to the top of the hill. That car is still there, its been there all week. The clay keeps washing around the wheels so it will have to be pulled out of the mud. I cross through the fence and the fence across the power line right of way is still there. Last time I was here I wired the post to a small pine tree with a short peice of barbed wire I found hanging on a post. This time I get another peice and wire it at the bottom. I continue on down the little road to the river. Its been washed some with all the rain. With the wet leaves on the road I make no sound in passing. Would I see a deer? No not this time. When I get to the river I can see its up some and muddy. Drops of rain from the trees and water bugs make little ripples in the water. A slight breeze high up makes rain drops fall from the trees in the forest behind me. A mist hangs over the water and fogs up my glasses and I have to take them off to see. After cleaning them I walk on through the forest to the stream. All the low places have water now and it finds its way to the stream and turns it dark. I walk up to the little twin falls and stand there looking around. The mosquitos have found me so I start to leave. Theres a break in the clouds and the sun shines through the trees to make golden patches of sunlight on the forest floor. Soon I am out of the woods again and up the hill. Passing by the cemetary I look across the graves. The smooth surface of some of the slabs look like little rectangle pools reflecting the clouds. I hear a sound in the forest and I look back. I see rain coming I hope its not a hard rain. In just a minute its raining on me and my glasses are messed up again. I take them off and carry them in my hand. Raindrops hang on my eyelashes and eyebrows, but its great! Love walking in the rain! At my sisters house I see a baby martin on the road. Should I pick him up? No better not! He has to survive on his own for the continued migration soon to come. I go on and soon the rain stops. Along the wet pavement I can see clouds reflected there with patches of blue. Then I am at the car and on my way home.
