A Moment In Time

Back when I was small we didn't have a refrigator like today. We had an icebox and an "iceman" delivered blocks of ice twice a week. Sometimes we would order extra at the end of the week, or someone would drive to town to pick up some ice and rock salt. Then on Sunday we would get out the ice cream churn and the older boys would turn it. My grandmother would spread a thick towel over the top and the younger kids would take turns sitting there to keep the pressure on the turning. Sometimes we would stick our hands in the ice to get a peice to eat and it would be so cold your fingers would turn blue and hurt when they started warming again. Some of the ice cream that was made she would put fresh fruit in. Then we got our chance at homemade ice cream and it would be so good, especially on hot summer days. You had to eat it slowly because when you ate it too fast it was so cold it would make your head and face hurt. Fun memories from my past that kids today will never know!
