About the Neohomeridae: Back in the days of yore, when the magical land of Classics was for the intelligent and educated, things were happy in the universe. A scholar could look into Plutarch's Life of Pompey and do nothing but learn important facts. But one day, two monsters were unleashed upon Classicsland. They were known only as Ephor and Archon, and they were very different from the scholars the land had seen before. For example, many people read Plutarch's lives and find them to be sensible biographies--Ephor and Archon, on the other hand, found them to be brilliant and oft hilarious character sketches (it takes a certain kind of 'mind' [using the term loosely, of course] to get out of "The Life of Pompey" the fact that he bit his girlfriend!). The two were delighted, and like the Horatii, took an oath then and there: they would enlighten others. No more would people think of Classics as boring reports of battles or building designs or numerical years! Instead, they pledged to enthrone the monsters of human drama, of whirling and breathtaking tales of valour and meekness alike, of mind-jerking puzzles and feats. Thus, the Neohomeridae were born! |
