2001 Kent Roosevelt Lady Rough Rider Invitational
The Lady Rough Rider was held under sometimes difficult weather conditions.  Friday night was at times downright cold, but on Saturday, the overcast conditions made it ideal for some good distance races.  The 4x800 was won by North Royalton on Friday night going away.  They ran 9:45.8 to Kent Roosevelt's Second Place 10:04.4. Wadsworth took third with Glenville 4th and NDCL fifth.
Saturday brought warmer tempetures and some better running weather.  The first distance event of the day was a rather uneventful 1600.  The lead pack consisted of NDCL's Zaylor, Kent's Jodi Hensel and Field's Michelle Muth.  These three ran together until about 300 to go when Zaylor put the hammer down and easily ran away from the other two.  Hensel held on for second and Muth took third.
In the 800, the biggest surprise was the Jeanna Fascione of North Royalton wasn't in the lead at the halfway point, she was two seconds behind.  Wadsworth's Zellers took the early pace and led through the 400 in a very conservative 67.  Fascione was not far behind in 68.5.  Fascione however took the lead at the 500 mark and proceeded to run away from Zellers to win in 2:20.2.  Zellers was second in 2:26.7.  Third and fourth went to a pair of Kent runners in Lauren Sloan (2:29.2) and Stephanie Wade (2:29.5)  Zaylor took fifth in 2:34.
The 3200 was an interesting race early on.  However, the outcome was no longer in doubt at the mile mark.  From the gun a three woman pack immediately broke away.  Wadsworth's Courtney Blackman and Kent's Kelly Felter and Tiffany White. The opening lap was a 76, follwed by an 84.  Blackman then fell back on the third lap as White and Felter went through the 1200 mark in 4:09.  Felter then continued her pace as White fell off. By the mile mark Felter had a ten second lead on White and it just grew.  Felter's lap by lap splits were 76-84-87-87-88-88-87-82 for an 11:21.8 finish.   This was a very well paced race and she still had some kick at the end.  The race for second was a little more dramatic as Blackman fought her way back up to White and won second place in an 11:58.  White took third in 12:08.
The story of this meet was how well Kelly Felter ran with only limited competition.  White was able to push her for the first mile then Felter just kept going.  When she gets some competition it is not inconceivable that she can run sub-11.
