Known As Italy's Best
.
The Neapolitan Mastiff is an ancient Italian breed blessed with intelligence and a calm, steady nature. As a dedicated and protective family guard dog, the neapolitan has few equals. Make No mistake--this is a big breed. A measurement of 30 inches at the shoulder is not unusual, but it is not so much the height of the neapolitan that makes it  imposing. While mature females weigh in at 100 pounds or more, males can tip the scales at 180+ pounds!

The breed is distinctive because of its large folds of loose skin. Usually the ears are cropped rather short, but they may be left natural. The tail is docked two-thirds its natural length. Even with its great size and lumbering gait, the neapolitan can move about with amazing speed and agility when it needs to.

There is a wide range of colors for the breed: blue and black is most often seen and tawny and mahogany are acceptable. All colors may be bridled. And small patches of white on the chest and toes are accepted.

The Neapolitan is not just for any owner. The breed's protective instincts and loyalty to his family develop naturally, but like any dog with intense loyalties, the urge to protect must be properly channeled. Socialization and training are important in developing a Neapolitan into a good canine citizen. An overindulgent and permissive owner will produce a social delinquent, which in a breed as large as the Neapolitan Mastiff can lead to serious consequences. The Neapolitan needs a responsible owner so that its many marvelous qualities are not overzeasly administered.

It should also be understood that the Neapolitan is NOT an attack dog and is far more apt to knock down and pin the intruder or hold him at bay until assistance arrives. This is not exactly what your guest or the delivery man are hoping will happen when they come calling.

In the right hands, Neapolitans are loving family companions, and though they tend to be one-person or one-family dogs, they are easily taught to be tolerant of all approved strangers through proper socialization and training. Other pets are no problem for the Neapolitan. Introduced young enough they coexist with other dogs and animals of all kinds.

I suggest to anyone thinking of buying or a New Neo owner to buy Sherilyn Allens Book "The Official Book Of The Neapolitan Mastiff".

Neo's have health concerns:
" The bigger the dog the more likely the health problems, The bigger the dog the more breeding problems, the bigger the dog the shorter the life span."
Please read Neapolitan Mastiff History, Temperament, Books and more!
