Ear Cleaning
Cleaning of a dogs ears is as important in the grooming routine as brushing and bathing.
Swollen ears or excessive waxy buildup can indicate allergies or other health problems, But starting an ear cleaning routine while your puppy is young accustoms it to having its ears handled and will familiarize you with what a healthy ear looks like.

.Buy the appropriate supplies, including cotton balls and a specially formulated wax
loosening ear-cleaning solution. Do Not substitute hydrogen peroxide because it may make ear irritations worse.
.The visible part of the clean ear -  the pinna will be clear of substances. A dirty one will
show skin flakes, wax, debris and dirt. Take your dog to the Veterinarian for an exam if the ear has an unpleasant odor. It may be irritated or infected, and only your Veterinarian can tell the difference.
.Fill the ear canal and pinna with the cleaning solution and use a cotton ball to swab it
out. Don't stick it in to far or you may not be able to retrieve it. Massage the ear canal at
the point where you can feel the cartilage extend into the head. The messaging will loosen the wax on the lining and the small hairs inside the canal. Replace the cotton ball when it
gets dirty and repeatedly refill the pinna with solution until the cotton balls come out clean. A daily cleaning may be necessary until the cotton balls remain clean.
.Clean your puppy's ears every other week once it reaches 3 months of age.

Ear Care Facts
.Swollen or excessive wax production may indicate allergies.
.If your pup repeatedly shakes its head, rubs or scratches its ears, a piece of hair  or
other substance may be causing irritation. Have it examined by your Veterinarian.
.Excessive wax provides a fertile breeding ground for bacteria.
.Puppies with floppy ears are more likely to have ear problems because less air circulates through the ears, and  they remain moist.
.The pinna, as in humans, is a modified skin that produces wax instead of oil.
.Ear infections are treated with antibiotics,  ear inflammations aren't.
.An inflammation always develops before an infection. An inflammation doesn't always
mean infection is about to happen.
.Inflamed ear tissue can allow bacteria normally present on your pups body to deeper
invade its tissues. This can lead to ear infections if left untreated.
.Dogs with longer hair in there ear canals such as Poodles, can retain more debris, A
professional groomer can trim this hair to help avoid problems.
