Day of Contrasts

Bright sunshine warms southern slopes

While gritty snow piles hunker in north slope shadows.

Strings of honking geese barrel north

While a mangy raccoon staggers to die under an overturned boat.

Warmed sap swells into bud laden reaches

While chocolate melted mountain snows carry dead tree trunks in roiling currents.

All around life stirs

While winter refuses to go quietly into that warm night.
