About: The incomparable Sarah Slean, singer-songwriter, poet, painter, actress, alternative indie rocker, pop chanteuse from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Grew up east of Toronto in Pickering, Sarah released her first EP, "Universe", while she was still a college student at York University in 1998. Sarah Slean loves her little piano, and it shows in her music. The song "Weight" off of her first EP is dominated by Sarah's piano playing, with light drumming and guitar in the background.

I noticed Sarah Slean's music after the release of her second album "Blue Parade", and WBER started playing her song "Playing Cards With Judas" in mid-1999. The song starts with a few simple, but catchy piano notes, then the violin continues the introduction. Along comes Sarah's humming, and finally, the main body of the song starts with bass guitar, drumming, and her piano playing. Sarah's singing is nothing short of mesmerizing, and even to this date, after 8 years, I have never been tired of hearing Sarah sing. "Blue Parade" and "My Invitation" are another two songs that I love. They are simple, just Sarah's singing and her piano (and a little horn in "My Invitation"), slow, a little sad, and the two songs set an atmosphere that any listener can get lost in.

Sarah Slean's third album, "Night Bugs", came out on March 19, 2002, and it was Sarah's first album on a major record label. Since the release of "Night Bugs", Sarah had received two Juno nominations, and her songs "Sweet Ones" was her breakout song. Again, the piano leads the opening of "Sweet Ones", follows by drumming, guitar playing, and Sarah's singing. A video of this song can be found on the bottom of this page. Another song, "Duncan", is a superbly crafted pop song. It is a little sad, but upbeat and inspiring. "Dark Room" is an unique song by Sarah. It is instrumental only, no vocals, and it is like a little glimpse into Sarah's soul. A little shy, a little dark, loving, quiet, full of hope, and when the time comes, she's not afraid to bloom and blossom.

"Day One", Sarah Slean's fourth album, came out in 2004. For this album, Sarah moved away from her previous piano-heavy songs, and ventured into pop territories. With songs like "Lucky Me" and "Day One", which have both became quite popular in Canada. Of course, you'll still hear a lot of piano-playing in "Day One", but it is not as dominating as before. Sarah also appeared in a Bravo (Canada) program called "Arts and Minds", and you can view the Quicktime Movie or the WIndows Media at Warner Music's site. Sarah Slean also appeared and sang in the film "Black Widow".

Sarah's latest album is "Orphan Music", which came out on October 31, 2006. It contains recordings of her live shows, and a few new tracks. Sarah Slean's live shows usually include only her and her piano, and that is how the songs appear on "Orphan Music". They are simple, personable, and make her fans feel closer to her music.

I have seen Sarah in concert six times, and I love her performance, her jokes, and her flirting with her fans. For more about the Baroness, go to her website.
