Video: Description:
Angelfish - Suffocate Me
Suffocate Me
Angelfish was fronted by Shirley Manson, who everyone knows, is the lead vocalist of Garbage. According to music history, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker were watching the video for "Suffocate Me" on MTV one night, and decided that Shirley was the singer they need for their new band "Garbage", and the rest is history. I like Angelfish. Their music is a little gothic, a little heavy, quite melodic, and has a bit of old British rock feel to it.

The second video "Heartbreak To Hate" is in black and white, and I've never seen it until today (April 16, 2006). It's a very good song, melodic, and Shirley showed good emotion in her vocals for this song.

Annie - Heartbeat
Heartbeat
I discovered Annie (born Anne Lilia Berge Strand in Norway) while listening to WBER in late 2005. This song is one of those European-dance electro-bubblegum-pop type song. Catchy melody, a little dreamy, and Annie's singing is sweet and angelic. For more info, go to her webpage.
Fiona Apple - Sleep To Dream
Sleep To Dream
Fiona Apple. Extremely talented. Opinionated. Has a bit of emotional issue, but she is older now. "Sleep To Dream" was her big break. It provides a fairly accurate of Fiona's mind back in 1996. Rebellious, moody, annoyed, angry.

"Criminal" was Fiona's breakthrough song. I think her video had a lot to do with it, but it's a good song nevertheless. It's a little dark, kind of like a confession. But everytime I hear that song, I think of the video. Are her eyes really glowing hellish red in the video?

"Never Is A Promise" is a beautiful song. The piano in the background is an excellent companion to Fiona's voice, which covered a nice range.

And then there is this clip of Fiona singing "Extraordinary Machine" on the Today show. It's like a little story, and it's amazing. Her singing is amazing, and so perfect.

Ayria - My Revenge On The World
live in Los Angeles on Jan. 17, 2007
My Revenge On The World
Ayria is fronted by Toronto's Jennifer Parkin, who specializes in electro-industrial synthpop, and Joseph Byer.

As you can hear in this live clip, Ayria's live show is a little disorganized. The music is loud, and electronic beats just come at you like punches (just like good industrial music). Jennifer rules, but her live shows are still in development. She recently added a drummer, instead of using computerized drumming.

This video for the song "My Device" was just released on May 15, 2007. Hot out of the oven. The song itself is great. Wonderful beats, and Jennifer's singing goes well with the music. The video contains some cheesy CGI, but the cool fight scenes make up for the CGI.

Bush - Mouth (remix)
Mouth
This song was kind of a theme song for the movie "An American Werewolf In Paris". Personally, I don't like Bush, because Gavin Rossdale, the lead singer, once said he is in the music business for the money (you're suppose to say that it's for the love of music). But this song has always stuck with me since 1997. It is a good remix of the original song. A little dark, a little mysterious, and Gavin's vocals fit. So there. Oh, and one more thing, Julie Delpy est trés jolie, n'est pas?
Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On
live in Australia on Feb. 2, 2007

Neko
I know I've never been a big fan of country music, but there is something about this song by Neko Case. I first heard Neko's songs in late 2006, she has a wonderful voice, and the music has a nice rhythm and beat to it. The song itself straddles a thin line between country and southern rock. It's uplifting, but a little sad. And I can't stop tapping my fingers on the table while this is playing. Oh, and don't miss the conversation between Neko and her backup singer in the beginning. For more info, go to Neko's website
Chevelle - Send The Pain Below
Send The Pain Below
Chevelle was founded in 1994 by brothers Pete and Sam Loeffler. A third brother Joe Loeffler joined in 1996, and he was replaced by brother-in-law Dean Bernardini in 2005. Chevelle caught my attention with their bass-heavy deep dark metal sounds, and vocals that varies between soft melodic to full-bore scream. I discovered Chevelle probably from listening to WBER in 2002, but I don't really remember.

The first video here "Send The Pain Below" demostrates the range of Pete's voice, and the music is not too heavy, which is radio-friendly. The video itself is okay...

"Comfortable Liar" is one of the better song from their second album "Wonder What's Next". Extremely bass heavy, which I like. The singing is good, but I just really like the bass-heavy sound of this song.

"The Clincher" from Chevelle's third album sounds a lot like songs from their second album, which I like anyways, so that's all good. Bass heavy, melodic vocals, and the video is decent.

Deftones - Bored
Bored
Classic Deftones. Deftones was one of the original bands that combined heavy metal with rapping or screaming vocals. Over the years, they have stayed true to their music style: heavy bass line, angry vocals, etc. "Bored" was probably the song that gained them widespread attention. The music is heavy, and Chino sang about being bored, which youths back in the early to mid 90's could identify with.

The second video of Deftones playing the song "Engine No. 9" was taped back in 1994, before the band got signed and famous. They had amazing energy, and this video is 13 years old!

Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
Bring Me To Life
I discovered Evanescence in early 2003 on the radio at work. The mix of heavy nu-metal sounds and female melodic vocals that doesn't involve any screaming was something new to me. I went on to buy every single cd Evanescence ever put out (even though the early ones were copies), and the sudden obsession led me to spend the most money ever ($65.00) on a copy of Evanescence's first CD, the Evanescence EP. But for everyone else out there, don't spend too much money on Ebay. Every early Evanescence song can now be downloaded at Evanescence Reference, and it's with permission from Amy Lee and Ben Moody.

"Bring Me To Life" was the song that made Evanescence a household name. The mixture of female vocals and male rapping was new, and it's very similar to Lacuna Coil. The video is cool, and Amy Lee was in a nightgown, which is kind of unusual for her because a nightgown is not really gothic.

"Going Under"'s video is very good.

"Everybody's Fool" illustrates how polarizing one's inner demon and facade can be. A person's public image doesn't always correspond with the person's true self. It's very freaky when Amy's is under water with her eyes wide open.

"Lithium" was off Evanescence's second album "The Open Door", which came out in 2006. It's very mellow, piano heavy, and it showcased Amy's amazing vocal range. After the departure of founding member Ben Moody, it was feared that Evanescence would either cease to exist or become pop, but "The Open Door" has proved all those fear to be unfounded.

"Sweet Sacrifice" is a newly released video by Evanescence. A little heavier than "Lithium", but still good.

Goldfrapp - Pilots
Pilots
Goldfrapp is composed of Alison Goldfrapp & Will Gregory, and they are an electro-disco band from Great Britain. I first discover Goldfrapp back in early 2003, when their song "Utopia" was a test track on WBER. Utopia is a very trip-hoppy and chill electronic song, so chill that it was perfect for those snowy months in Rochester.

"Pilots" is in the same musical style as "Utopia", and the video itself is pretty cool

"Ooh La La" is the first single off Goldfrapp's third album "Supernatural". It's still electronic, but the chill feeling is gong. It's much warmer, and more disco and dance music compared to their first album "Felt Mountain"

Hole - Violet
Violet
Hole, fronted by Courtney Love, with Eric Erlandson, with bassist Melissa Auf der Maur, and Samantha Maloney on drums.

"Violet" is a good old-fashioned grunge rock song.

"Malibu" is a little more pop oriented, sort of heavy, and did really well commercially.

Hole broke up in 2002, but to learn more about the band, go to their wikipedia page

Hole - Malibu
Malibu
House Of Pain - Jump Around
Jump Around
Classic House of Pain. This is one of the best, if not the best hip-hop song ever. Authentic, unmistakable sound. "I've got more rhymes than there're cops at a Dunkin Donut Shop" is probably my favorite line from this song. Everytime I hear this song, it's a good time. Be advised that this video is uncensored, which means that the word "bitch" was not blanked out.
Jem - They
Jem
No this has nothing to do with the 80's cartoon Jem. This is the Welsh singer-songwriter Jemma Griffiths, better known as Jem. I discovered her when I heard her song "24", which was played in the movie preview of "Ultraviolet" in early 2006. Jem has two different video versions for this song, but this second version is better, as you'll find out at 02:29 into the video (or when there are 46 seconds left)... Let's just say that Jemma is a little cutie in the first 02:29, then she's not so innocence anymore... webpage
Kidneythieves - Zerøspace
Zerospace
Kidneythieves. Industrial electronic rock. Free Dominguez rocks. She sings, she yells, she screams, and she's hot. The video "Zerøspace" will only reinforce those notions. Kidneythieves is dark, heavy, and the louder you turn the volume, the better they sound. I first noticed them when WBER first played "Zerøspace" in early 2002, and I've love them since. For more info, go to their website
Kidneythieves - Dyskrasia
Dyskarsia
KoRn - Freak On A Leash
Freak On A Leash
I really got into KoRn after hearing "All In The Family" played on WBER in late 1996.

"Freak On A Leash" was pretty much the first single/video that's heavier to hit the airwaves, after getting Americans hooked to NuMetal with the more radio friendly "Got The Life".

"Falling Away From Me" was the single/video that came out after "Freak On A Leash", and the video for "Falling Away From Me" actually follows the video for "Freak On A Leash"

KoRn - Falling Away From Me
Falling Away From Me
Lacuna Coil - Heavens A Lie
Lacuna Coil
Lacuna Coil is fronted by the bella Cristina Scabbia. Their music is described as gothic metal, and it's unlike anything from Italy. They sing almost entirely in English, with a couple exceptions. Their music is heavy, but melodic at the same time. I discovered them while searching for new music in early 2005, and enjoyed their music since. Cristina = hot goth chick. For Lacuna Coil's latest news, go to their website.
Lords of Acid - I Sit On Acid
* contains heavy sexual themes *

Tara MacLean - If I Fall
Divided
The very talented and beautiful Tara MacLean is a singer-songwriter from Canada. I discovered her when I went to a Dido concert back in 2000, and she was the opening act. Similar in style to her fellow Canadians Sarah McLachlan and Sarah Slean, Many of Tara's songs have that slow Sunday afternoon feel to them. They are relaxing, carefree, and beautiful.

Tara is currently in the country music supergroup "Shaye". For more on Tara, go to her official website. For more on Shaye, go to their official website

No Doubt - Don't Speak
Don't Speak
"Don't Speak" is a classic No Doubt video from 1996. I love No Doubt, and I love Gwen Stefani. I don't like the new music that Gwen puts out, but I'm happy for all her success. I think everyone has heard this song before, so enjoy the video.

"Sunday Morning" is another one of my favorites. It has a good melody.

"Ex-Girlfriend" was from No Doubt's second CD, their last one before they drifted away from alternative ska rock.

Prodigy - Breathe
Breathe
Discovered Prodigy (or The Prodigy) back in 1997. I don't remember which song I heard first on WBER, but "Breathe" might have been it. "Breathe" is an excellent industrial electronic song. The video is pretty tame, as compared to the next one...

This video features alcohol abuse, cocaine/heroine abuse, DWI, physical assaults, vandalism, nudity, and sex
This is the Prodigy video that was only shown on MTV late night back in late 1997, because of its content. It was featured again on MTV 2 "Most Contraversial Video". The video itself is great. A nice twist awaits those who have never seen the video. The song itself is great. Nice industrial electronic music, great beats, reminds me of the 90's. This is actually the slightly censored version, without the heroine use, the drunk driving, and slightly less nudity.

Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground
6 Underground
I remembered the first time I saw this video was in Hong Kong. I was visiting relatives in 1997, and this came on the TV. This song is very chill, contains electronic, classical, and hip-hop elements (which makes it an early trip-hop song), and Kelli's vocals is great.
System Of A Down - Spiders
Spiders
System Of A Down is one of the best, if not THE BEST, heavy metal rock band today.

"Spiders" is a classic SOAD song from their first album, came out back in 1998. It is highly enjoyable, and it has great transition from quiet to loud, slow to fast, and then back.

"Chop Suey!" came out in the summer of 2001. It has great guitar riffs, great vocals/roars by Serj Tankian, and great guitar solo. I put both the music video and a live performance here, because the music video kept on getting taken off by people who claimed copyright. Oh, and the fans in this show are amazing. Check out the mosh pits...

"Toxicity" is another song I like. It has great transition from slow to fast, and quiet to loud. Serj's vocal is excellent on this song, wonderful bass line, and the drumming is amazing. It is almost humanly impossible to play any musical instrument that fast.

System Of A Down is never afraid to take a stand against different political issues. SOAD is great to listen to when I need something to calm down, or if I need something to get fired up. It's also great for scaring little kids and old folks :) For more on SOAD, go to their website

t.A.T.u - Ya Shosla S Uma
Ya Shosla S Uma
t.A.T.u comprises of the Russian duo Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova. Even though they are a completely manufactured pop group, they put out some good pop tunes.

"Ya Shosla S Uma" is known as "All The Things She Said" in the English speaking world. They have the same video for both the English & Russian versions of the song, but the two video were cut differently. In the top one (Russian), you could actually see Lena and Yulia singing, and you can see that the movement of their mouths and the singing are in sync. In the English version, when you actually get to see them sing, the video was cut in a way so that their mouth motion will kind of match up to the English lyrics.

"30 Minut" or "30 Minutes" in English, is a slow, mellow song. Kind of sad, it's kind of a "lost of love" type song, but Yulia's response to the lost is totally unnecessary and overblown.

"All About Us" is the first single off of their second CD "Dangerous And Moving". It's another catchy pop song, very similar to songs off their first album, and the video is uncensored with violence

The Wallflowers - One Headlight
One Headlight
The Wallflowers, fronted by Jacob Dylan, is one of the best, but under-appreciated rock bands from the late 1990's. This song was extremely overplayed by almost every single radio station in 1996, but I still haven't gotten tired of it yet. It's well crafted, everything balances well together, and the song is very relaxed and easy to listen to.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
Maps
First heard "Maps" on WBER in early 2004. It's catchy, has a good beat and rhythm, and even though "Maps" is kind of slow and mellow, the rest of the CD has a lot more energy, and it provided a good intro to the band. I don't know how Karen was able to contain all her energy in this video...

That's why "Date With The Night" is here too. It demonstrates the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' energy much better. It's hard to believe that there are only three people in the band.
