The stars shining down, little sparkles in the sky. So close, yet so far away at the same time. Staring up at the sky, the young prince looked younger than he was. He had been alive for 712 years. He had long brown hair in a braid, blue eyes, and though he looked like a 16-year-old human he was extremely built and in perfect shape. He didn’t really have any distinct features that made him different from anyone else except for his personality. He had always seemed extremely shy to others and had no friends. Everyone in his school was afraid to even be near him. He lived in the most peaceful place in the United States, New York. There had not been any crime in New York City for about 3 years now. Coincidently, that was when he had moved to New York.
He decided it was time for him to go home since the sun was almost up so he went back to his Dragon form. His Wings ripped from his back and extended there full 6 feet each direction from him. His skin changed to a purple color and his face became more distinct, rougher, and a lot angrier. He jumped from off the skyscraper and flew towards his little apartment. It had been a normal night as it always had been since the news started to cover his nightly garbage runs. No criminals were left alive in New York anymore.
He seemed to float not really fly through the sky and he moved too fast for most people to see him. He landed on his ledge and as routine had it changed back to his human form. It had always hurt for him to change to a human and it always felt so good to return to his true form. He lay there crumbled up on the floor not moving nor breathing. Then he focused all of his energy and began to use his new lungs. He learned how to use them again and began to breath. It seemed so easy to all the humans he had ever seen but so hard to him each time he became a human he had trouble adjusting to the pain of not breathing and then trying his hardest to get his lungs to work. He was breathing normally now and it was time for him to work on getting his legs strong enough to hold him up.
After a few minutes of trying to get up he was able to stand with relative ease. He wiped his face and insulted the human body everyway he could think to. He looked around he’d need clothes since he had destroyed the ones he was wearing earlier. He walked over to his closet and pulled out a pair of khaki pants and a polo shirt. He laid them on his bed and walked toward the shower. The showering routine was the only custom or actually the only anything about humans he had ever liked.
He stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel. He laughed a little as he dried himself off with the towel; humans always seemed to have something for everything. He still hadn’t decided if that made them lazy or smart, but then everything about humans seemed to point to the lazy end. He tossed the towel into the corner and walked to his bedroom. He grabbed the clothes he had selected and began to put them on. Of all the things about people he didn’t understand, he didn’t get clothes. When he had come here it was winter and his human body loved the warmth the clothes provided. But he didn’t understand why they forced you to wear clothes in the summer. He had tried once a few years back to leave the house without clothes. It was an incident anyone involved in wouldn’t forget.
It was a hot summer morning and even in his air-conditioned room the young prince was sweating. He decided it was too hot for clothes and he grabbed some money to head for the grocery store. He barely got outside of his own building when a couple of men in blue uniforms walked up to him. They asked him what he thought he was doing. “I’m going to the grocery store,” he had said. “Forget something?” one of the officers asked. “No” he replied. Then they had asked him to come with them. He had recognized that these men were the upholders of peace for humans and that he should obey them. They took him to the precinct and decided to let him go they took him back to his house after an hour of questions and a fee they made him pay. He didn’t understand why but he decided he would wear them anyway.
He looked at the clock it was 7, time for him to go to school. He walked slowly, as usual and made it to his high school at 7:30 exactly. Which was his usual arrival time. He walked into the building and headed for his homeroom class. This was his favorite and least favorite activity in his normal life. He was here to learn about humans and this was the best way to do it. He didn’t like it much though because he hated to be stared at. Of course a 16-year-old boy with no friends doesn’t get privacy in a high school.
He sat down and took out his book for his class. Books always seemed like one of the best ideas humans ever came up with. He was even a bit jealous that his people had not come up with a form of writing but then his people had never had a need for written communication due to there natural telepathy. He often got bored in class, though he never knew why. He often found himself remembering his home world and the many clans of elders that had raised him for those many years. He remembered the fire clan the best but he tried not to think of his home world when he was around humans. He always feared his latent powers would surface while he was around them and he knew that would only complicate things.
The bell
ring and he saw there was no teacher. He thought about standing up and maybe going
to look for the teacher but he ruled the idea out because he knew it would only
bring him attention. He sat there for
about 2 minutes and then he stood up and looked around. He had felt something. He looked around for the presence he had
felt. He could see it wasn’t anyone in
the room he thought about what he must look like after he realized everyone was
staring at him. He sat back down really
slowly as the door opened. He looked at
this new individual and he wondered who this person was. “Good morning class. I’m your new
teacher. You can call me Mr.
White.” The teacher seemed to wait for
a response from the class but after a few seconds decided to move on. “Well today we’re going to be talking about
a few myths from the Middle Ages ok?”
Someone raised his or her hand.
“Yes?” The teacher asked
sounding very polite but also very forged.
“Well we weren’t exactly on the middle ages yet we were only on Pax
Romana.” The student offered. “Well then allow me. Rome was strong Rome fell. People rebuilt and now we’re at the middle
ages.” The class seemed to share a laugh and then the teacher silenced
them. The entire class was scared of
this new teacher already. Except for
one student who only felt intrigued.
“Well does anyone have any myths
they’ve heard from the middle ages?”
The teacher waited a second as the students pondered whether or not to
answer for fear of being shot down like their fellow classmate. “I’ll ask again…” the teacher was irritated
and a few hands went up before he could ask again. “You” “ umm well knights and magic…” the kid faded off expecting
to use that as an answer. “What about
knights and magic?” “Umm well they umm
a myth from the middle ages knights and magic…” “How do you know that’s a myth?”
“Well I don’t believe in magic…”
“You don’t huh? And why
not?” “Because I’ve never seen it and
it’s not real.” “So anything you
haven’t seen isn’t real?” “Well no
that’s not what I meant. I just
meant-" “Quiet” The student sat
back and tried to think of something else to say but even if he had thought of
something he would have been afraid to say it anyway.
“Ok then so get out your
textbooks.” The rest of the class went
by completely normal no more smart remarks, no off topic talk. Well ok maybe
that’s not normal but it would be considered normal after a few weeks.
After class Mr. White had asked one
of the students to stay after. The
young prince wondered what for but went on to his classes.
The young prince was so glad to get
home and once he did he sat outside on his balcony and watched the sun go
down. He couldn’t wait to be himself
again. As the sun was a minute from
gone he did something that we’ll call a psychic sweep. He can read the minds of everyone at
once. This was how he always seemed to
be in the right place at the right time.
He seriously doubted there would be any trouble since it had been a long
time since he had to do anything. The
sun was gone and he waited an extra few seconds. Then he jumped off the ledge he fell about 3 stories while his
clothes ripped off and his skin went through a change again. His wings were the first things to come out
as usual and he kept afloat before he hit the ground. He almost landed on the ground, but then he flew off towards his
usual skyscraper to wait and watch. He
had a very bad and uneasy feeling from that fall; he had never fallen so far he
always changed quicker. He tried to dismiss it as a one-time thing and promised
it wouldn’t happen again.
He reached the building, which was 3
miles away in about two minutes. He was
proud that his flying speed hadn’t diminished.
He stood there on the building and looked around, he did another sweep
then his gaze went right back to it’s usual nighttime spot, the sky. He looked up and dreamed of going home and
even more of exploring with his own kind.
He knew his mission was important.
He had been prepared for it since birth. He had trained and been told stories from the day he was
born. He remembered why he was here and
never once had he forgotten.
The story of Aldici had been told
since he had hatched and the moment he could squeal. He remembered every bit of it like he was hearing it. Aldici was a coward and a traitor to the
dragon race. He had always desired more
power and sought to gain it by enslaving a weaker people. His plans were discovered immediately but
too late nonetheless. He had already gathered
a few followers by the time the idea popped into his head. He was excommunicated and that was when he
decided to attack the dragon clans one by one.
The eldest dragons were appalled and declared war on Aldici. They fought for years until Aldici and his
men left and headed out to enact their plan.
They had targeted a blue and green planet that had once been more
beautiful then any other. But its
inhabitants had been cursed with curiosity and had led their planet to
waste. The dragons were too weak to
follow and as miraculous as it was, the queen gave birth to a Myrmidon as
unexpectedly as Aldici’s betrayal. The
young prince was trained for many years and then sent to Earth to defeat Aldici
and show the humans the error of there ways.
He was to be there guardian.
The myrmidon twitched and fell after
being hit by a huge ball of pure evil energy.
He fell about a foot and flew back up.
He looked around first with his eyes and then with his mind he saw no
one. He wondered if he was going crazy…then
he was hit again this one flung him into the building, which had been his
lookout point. He turned around to see
a blur fade away. He thought again then
continued to act clueless and look in every direction then he flew at top speed
up and then down as another ball flew towards him. He turned to see the culprit and flew towards him. It was a dragon! This had to be one of Aldici’s brood. He flew toward the dragon as it tried to escape. He chased it as fast as he could and he was
beginning to catch up just as the brood stopped. He stopped as well and waited.
The brood ling smirked and the prince wondered why. The myrmidon heard noises from his left and
right; he looked only to find another brood ling on each side. He wondered if he could take the three of
them on by himself. Before he could
decide on a threat to share, he was hit from behind. He had been kicked by a fourth and that sent him flying into the
first brood ling that punched him towards a different brood ling and they each
took turns knocking him around. Then he
screamed just as he was in the middle again.
He floated steadily and looked at each of the brood lings. The winds
started to change directions as he summoned all of his dragon powers. He called forth all that he could muster and
began to get a little thicker. He was
now glowing in an odd color somewhere between purple and gold. He flew towards the first brood ling that
wasn’t laughing anymore and went to punch him but his fist was caught by a
different dragon and he instead went for a knee to the stomach the first dragon
fell onto a nearby building. Then the
myrmidon looked at the brood ling holding his wrist. He growled and went to kick him as another dragon grabbed his
ankle. The two holding him held tight and then began to fly towards the
ground. They held on and flew to about
two feet off the ground and let go of him sending him into the street and
making a circular crater. They began to
laugh and float up a bit as the other two dragons flew down towards the new hole. They each took there hands and spread them
out. Each brood ling flew away in a
different direction and screamed loudly with there mouths open wide. There mouths began to glow and as the
myrmidon regained his senses and watched them he saw them each begin to wave as
though he was looking at a street on a hot day. Then he knew what was to happen.
The brood lings shot flames from their mouths towards the crater. But, the myrmidon summoned all of his
strength and used it to fly out of there.
He got farther into the sky then he expected and he only saw the others
as specs below him. There was a huge
explosion as there flames hit a gas line and they slowly flew up towards
him. He gathered his thoughts and
figured that the Leader was the one who had hit him from behind and hadn’t done
much else and judging by his wings he was a leader. He squealed and flew at the one he now thought of as Leader. The brood lings looked up and each one flew
off into a different direction but the prince was locked onto Leader. He flew with him as he swerved through
buildings and then leader picked up a car with his claws and tossed it towards
the prince. The myrmidon fell from the
impact of the car and the other dragons caught up, they stood over the car and
the collapsed prince they each exchanged smiles and then the leader was smacked
with the car and flew about a mile into the sky. The others scattered and watched as the myrmidon flew up towards
Leader, they followed. The fight was
just getting under way, and they all knew that.
