Rating: PG - two bad words, nothing to make your panties twist.

Summary: Neo tries to gain a little insight into Trinity’s life...

Disclaimer: No way, no how, am I connected with the film, "The Matrix". If I was, I wouldn't be wasting my time writing
this. I would be laughing at all you little people while rolling in mountains of dollars with a naked Keanu Reeves. Ahem.
The movie belongs to the Brothers W. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

A Brief Glimpse

by Lazuli

It's so quiet, she thought to herself. Before, there had always been sound. People had laughed, people had cried, they'd
joked and talked and worried and bared every inch of their soul. Now, it was like a cemetery, ghosts of the former
shipmates walked around and tugged at her memory, screaming not be forgotten. For why they died not to be forgotten.
For them, they were murdered, murdered by a traitorous coward who couldn't be a man and face his own
responsibilities. Face his own character. Face himself.

He walked in slowly, trying not to disturb her thoughts. He loved to watch her think, imagine the wheels that were
turning in her head. What she thought about, he didn't know, and wouldn't ask. These past few days had been hard on
the remaining four, memories around every corner, and their near brush with death still weighed heavily on their minds.
He didn't blame her for being so moody, after all, who was he to judge her? Sure, they were now lovers in all possible
senses, but he still didn't know much about her. He didn't know what her "past" had been like, how she had came to be
on the ship, what were her likes, what were her dislikes, hell, he didn't even know what her favorite color was. They
never had a chance to be friends, to go on a date, to go to a party, simple things like that that every couple should
experience. Smiling wryly, he ran a hand through his short black hair, and tried to imagine the two of them snuggling on
a couch and watching movies. No dice. All he saw was the tough warrior woman wearing black leather, or the tired crew
member struggling to fight for a desperate cause. If she knew what he was thinking, she would most certainly laugh at
him. Turning to go and find his mentor, he heard her speak:

"Wait".

He stopped.

"You were watching me."

"Yeah, I'm sorry-"

"Why?"

A pause.

"I didn't want to disturb you."

"From doing what? I'm not doing anything."

"You were...thinking."

"Everyone thinks, it's a fact of life."

"Is it?"

"Yeah."

"Or is it another illusion?"

"You tell me. You're The One."

"Well, there are things even The One doesn't know."

"Really? Like what?"

"Like where his girlfriend came from."

"Ha, a test tube, genius."

"No, from the Matrix. Where were you from?" His face was inquisitive .

"Does it matter?"

"I want to know."

"Why?"

"Because...I just do."

A pause.

"Atlanta. Atlanta, Georgia." He nodded.

"That's cool."

"Satisfied?"

"No."

"Jesus."

"What is your favorite food?"

"There was no such thing."

"Well, in the Matrix. What was it?"

"Fine, chocolate. Anything chocolate."

"Me too, cookies were my favorite." She smiled.

"Funny, I didn't peg you as the cookie type."

"That so? I damn well wish I had one now..."

"Oh, God."

"What?"

"Nothing. Actually, something. Why are you asking me these things?"

"I just want to know about you, that's all."

"Well, forget about everything I had in the Matrix. This is my only world now."

"Oh." He fiddled with his hands.

"Do you think you could ever let it go?"

"What?"

"The Matrix. Your time in it. Could you ever forget that?"

"No, never."

"Neither could I."

"But you know the weird thing?"

"What?"

She took his hand.

"As much as I'll never forget the Matrix, I have a feeling this world will be a lot better."

"Really? How so?"

"Well, for starters, we're free."

"True."

"There are no machines controlling us."

"True."

"We have the power over our actions."

"True."

"And...we have you."

He looked at her. She was smiling.

" *I* have you."

He pulled her to him and kissed her forehead.

"And you always will."

They didn't need old memories. They were going to make their own. Together.
