CROUCHING TIGER,
HIDDEN DRAGON
Don't let the subtitles put you off for a second.  This movie has redefined the martial arts genre.  It is a perfect blend of romance and kick-ass action.  Without giving too much away, the story centres around a mystical sword which is stolen by an unknown assailant at the start of the movie.  Chow Yun Fat is the legendary warrior that wants to give up his sword, but is forced to live by it once more.  Michelle Yeoh stars as a fellow warrior that has stood by his side since the beginning and aids in the quest to retrieve the sword.  The love story between these two characters is beautifully defined and equally understated, but in no way undermines its significance to the story.

I was left amazed by the martial arts sequences, they were like nothing I'd ever seen before on screen.  It was the first martial arts film that managed to be exhilarating and touching in equal measure.
The latter was largely due to career-best performances from the two leads.  So I repeat, don't let the subtitles put you off, just sit back and enjoy one of the true event pics of the year.
