BOX OFFICE NEWS [APR 13-APR 15 2001] |
The pint-sized sleuths of Spy Kids reigned supreme for the third straight weekend with $12.8M. The Miramax film slipped 25% in its third frame bringing its total to a very impressive $68.7M, and should go on to gross $100M domestically. Holding firm at number two was Paramount's crime thriller Along Came a Spider that grossed $11.3M. The Morgan Freeman starrer slipped 32%, bringing its ten day gross to a very healthy $34M. The film should eventually gross $70-$75 by the end of its domestic run. Premiering at number three this weekend was Miramax's Bridget Jones's Diary on which people shelled out $10.8M from 1,611 theatres. The Renee Zellweger picture averaged a healthy $6,700 per theatre take. Based on the best-seller by British author Helen Fielding, the film should go wider in the weeks to come and should finish with a healthy box office take, if the reviews are any indicator. Debuting in fourth place was Sony's Joe Dirt which grossed $8.2M. The David Spade movie about an intellectually-challenged man who goes in search for the parents that abandoned him as a kid, opened in 2.638 theatres and averaged a lukewarm $3,100 per location. Since opening on Wednesday the film has grossed $11M, and with a budget of only $16M, it looks set to provide Sony with a reasonable profit. Slipping to fifth place this weekend was New Line's drug drama Blow with $8M, a decline of approximately 35%. The Johnny Depp-Penelope Cruz starrer has grossed a respectable $26M in ten days, and looks set to gross at least $50M domestically. Fox Searchlight's drama Kingdom Come grossed $7.5M from just 1,111 theatres. Toplined by Whoopi Goldberg, LL Cool J and Jada Pinkett-Smith, the film centres on a dysfunctional family brought together following the death of the father. The film has already outstripped its modest $7M budget in its first three days on release, and should turn out to be a very profitable film for Fox Searchlight. Universal/MGM's Josie & the Pussycats failed to make an impact at the box office and debuted at number seven with a dismal $5.2M from a wide 2,556 theatres. The film averaged a very poor $2,040 per theatre and looks like becoming the first big casualty of the season, despite a huge advertising campaign prior to its release. Loosely-based on the 70s cartoon and starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson, the $22M picture has grossed $7.2M since opening on Wednesday. Rounding off the top ten are Pokemon 3 that fell a steep 68% to $2.7M and provided WB with $13M in 10 days. Ashley Judd starrer Someone Like You grossed $2.6M and has grossed $22.3M to date, and Paramount's WWII epic Enemy at the Gates also grossed $2.6M, bringing its domestic cume to a reasonable $43.1M. |
