Past Life Repression
Now assuming that we travel from one plane of existance to the next, I believe that the strain on our ethereal selves is too great to break through the barrier to other planes of existance.  I imagine very much like our atmosphere, a barrier, and the ethereal self is like a space shuttle, one that is ill-equipped to pass through, and thus falls into a state of amnesia, of sorts.  But after a while, our souls or spirits grow strong enough to retain some of that knowledge, in a way evolving to withstand the shock sustained by passing through the Ethereal Veil.  Portions of those other lives are carried through the veil, and we call that past lives.  Rationing for this comes from many things and I will go into this topic deeply.

Imagine a riverbed, water, or prana, life energy runs straight through it, like a current.  When we die, that particular river dries right up, and we're left with a scar upon the earthen ground.  In an ethereal sense, our lives end, but the fact that they existed is retained in space and time, there may not be life going on there, just as there is not more water in that dried up river.  This is my basic notion of Death, and may be moved to it's own section of Psionide someday, as it can be applied to many things, but I had to stick it in here for now before I lost it in my head.
