The Dark Pupil
I stood near the Congressman, not taking my eyes off the crowd, watching for telltale signs that someone might attacknone came. Auras were clear too. This crowd was harmless. So why I was here, I couldnt tell you. Maybe the council that assigned our missions enjoyed giving me the bogus ones.
Finally, the man raised both arms in a gesture of ending his speech, as he always did, and I sighed a bit of relief. Oh, thank GOD.
I followed him out, my hand never far from my talis dagger, my eyes never resting for long, keeping track of where he and I were all along.
When we reached the relative safety of his house, I relaxed. Entering the foyer, I looked around.no cameras. No security of any kind.odd.
He led me into the living room, where he proceeded to go to the wet bar in the corner and offer me a drink.
No, thank you. I replied, Im only 17.
Ah.so young. he said, in the creepy voice he always used when he spoke to me.I had a weird feeling that he was coming on to me, but I ignored it. I only had three more days of guarding him after this, and I was free.
Are you sure that you dont want any, I promise not to tell. he smiled a skeezball smile at me. Ughgrossthe guy was maybe fifty, possibly older from what Ive learned in the past few weeks.
Im fine. Do you not have any security in this house? I changed the subject.
No, princess, not really. I trust my fellow citizens.
Sir, please call me Miss Nenona., or just Nenona, if you prefer.
Right. he poured himself some brandy and sat down. So youre really the leader of this generation of Guardians?
Yes, sir, I am.
Wow, such a big job for someone so young.
Its rough, but I believe that I can handle it.
I have a feeling that youll do great, kid
I smiled. Thank you, sir. I will try to my best ability.
He patted the couch next to him. Come, sit, talk.
Id rather not, sir. I have to be on my toes. You understand.
Im afraid I don.
Just then, he was interrupted by me dragging him out of the living room and into the foyer. A car. Im sure I heard it. There.
CRASH. Every window in the house broke, along with anything else glass. The congressman grabbed at his ears. I was wearing earplugs in anticipation of gunfire.Of course.sonic cannonbut only we had thoseoh, god no.
A man with long auburn hair, reddish-brownish almost, with longer layers in the back, and shorter in the front, and long bangs, wearing a long black coat, strode in through the broken glass wall that overlooked the property. He swept aside his bangs and raised a gun at the congressman.
I shoved his head down, protecting the principal.
The long-haired man shot and missed, hitting a large metal statue behind me instead. I strode towards the guy and shoved the gun hand upwards, and with his left hand he grabbed me by the throat. I punched him with my free hand and he and I both let go, me backing up and gasping for air--he had nearly crushed my windpipe.
He pulled out a second gun, holding it on me.
Freeze, girly. This one has Talis bullets.
I couldnt help it. I dont care. I said, and lunged at him, shoving the guns out of his hands after heating them slightly with my power. He wasnt holding weapons, but he was still armed. His right hand flashed as he blocked my blows, not even moving the rest of his body, but relying on it solely.he was a mecha, a cyborg..
Arrrgggghhhh!! I exclaimed, twirling a kick, which he easily caught.
Are you even trying, kid?
Shut up, and try fighting legal. I blocked one of his blows using my forearms, and even though I was wearing my leather jacket, with padding and armor, it hurt. I staggered back, squeezing tears from my eyes.
Just who are you, pretty boy? I asked, frustrated that I was defeated so easily.
Taos, kid, Taos Moonstalker. Now get out of the way. he said, shoving me aside. I stood there, clutching my forearm, then attempted to follow him.
Mr. Ross hadnt attempted to leave, he just stood there, cowering from the striking figure that Taos cut.
Judgment Day. Taos said, smirking and pulling a flat, short sword from his coat.
What did he ever do?!? I asked, coming closer, but still unable to guard Mr. Ross, hoping to bide my time and get in between Taos and him.
Taos laughed. A raspy, low laugh that made me think of one whos knowledge had aged them beyond their years. He lowered the sword a bit and turned to look at me.
A proper question would be: What didnt he do?
Big mistake. I saw the opening and dove for his hand, struggling until I had pinned him against the wall. He laughed softly and drove his knee into my stomach, shoving me away, and knocking me into the metal sculpture. I regained my balance quickly, and charged again, driving my shoulder into his chest. OW. He felt like he was armor-plated, and he barely moved, but I got him away from Mr. Ross. I reached down to the congressman and grabbed his arm, attempting to lift him off the steps up to his living room where he lay, but Taos twisted my arm and shoved me down on the steps to the right of him.
I lay on the steps, my forearms aching, my left arm on fire, and I turned to see Taos, standing over me with another gun in his hand.
Just let me do this, girly, and I promise to not hurt you.
I cant let you do that. I went to get up and he shot me in the left leg, just above my knee. I screamed in pain.it wasnt a talis bullet, but it still hurt. Taos moved over to Mr. Ross and holding the man by his collar, shoved the sword through Mr. Rosss gut. The old congressman struggled for about a minute, and then was still as Taos clutched his throat tightly too.
I lay there, bleeding on the carpet, as Taos dragged Mr. Ross out the door, leaving a trail of blood.
