---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Nelson,
Thank you for your support of our initiative in helping the victims of the
Tsunami disaster. I have added York Central Chinese Canadian Association
to our list of supporting organizations. I am sending you the information
on our fund-raising campaign and volunteer recruitment. Please feel free
to call me at 416-706-0111 if you have any questions.
In order to help raise funds for Canadian Red Cross and Oxfam Canada with
their relief efforts in the affected countries of Tsunami, over 30 community
organizations under the umbrella of Canadians For Tsunami Relief (CTR)
are co-sponsoring a fundraising telethon and mall-based collection effort
this coming weekend on January 8 and 9. Chaired by Dr. Joseph Wong, a well
known community leader who has initiated and coordinated a number of disaster
relief fundraising campaigns in the past, Canadians for Tsunami Relief was
formed in response to the tsunami crisis in South Asia. Our goal is to raise
as much fund as possible before January 11, 2005 to match the Canadian Government's
dollar-for-dollar-match deadline.
The total funds raised will be split evenly and every dollar will go to the
two charities. 50% of the proceeds raised will go to Canadian Red Cross,
whose mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing
the power of humanity in Canada and around the world. The other 50% will
go to Oxfam Canada, a non-profit international development organization founded
in 1963 that supports community programs in food security, health, nutrition
and democratic development with an emphasis on working with women.
The public is encouraged to donate money to TD Canada Trust bank account
532 521 1313 or make cheques payable to "CTR". Tax receipt will be issued
for donation over $20. The organization's fundraising strategy is a Telethon
that is to be held through major Canadian television outlets from 10:00 a.m.
to 12 midnight on January 8 (Saturday) and January 9 (Sunday). Hundreds of
volunteers with different language capabilities will stand by at the Bell
Call Centre with at least 200 phone lines to take calls from the public for
their donations. The Telethon's donation hotlines 1-866-444-8993 (toll free)
and 416-296-9595 (GTA) will be available during the Telethon. Apart from
Telethon, CTR will also hold various fundraising initiatives including donation
solicitations at local malls and shopping centres, as well as donation appeals
through different broadcast, electronic and print media resources. We need
hundreds of volunteers who speak English and other languages to accept donations
from different ethnic communities.
Special arrangements have been made with the OMNI TV to promote the telethon.
OMNI TV will broadcast a commercial free tsunami relief program from 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. on OMNI 1 and 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on OMNI 2, and during its various
diversity programs throughout the weekend. All Rogers broadcasting radios
and shopping channels across Canada will also broadcast our Telethon.
