Wine Winery Price Score Region Designation Date Reviewed
1989
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $800.00 98
Burgundy

11/15/95
A powerful, graceful, supple and elegant Burgundy. This cascades its sweet, honeyed, spicy pear and green apple flavors over a silky, beautifully crafted frame. The finish lingers forever. Sensational already, but try to wait until 1999 or 2000.
1978
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $750.00 98
Burgundy

11/15/95
Bright and lively, almost delicate compared with some of the others, but amazingly subtle and elegant. A seductive wine in which the spice, honey, vanilla and mineral nuances peek out from moment to moment. This is drinkable now.
1986
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $900.00 97
Burgundy

11/15/95
Harmonious, elegant, supple: beautifully detailed in every way. Superbly crafted and unfolds its pear, green apple and quince flavors slowly and gracefully across the palate. Approachable now, but should be best from 2000 to 2010.
1990
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $650.00 96
Burgundy

11/15/95
Firm and intensely focused, pouring a wealth of pineapple, grapefruit and walnut-tinged pear flavors into a lithe and elegant frame. Built to develop with a certain roughness. This needs until 2000 to 2005 to be at its best.
1971
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $600.00 96
Burgundy

11/15/95
Very crisp and focused, a smoky, sexy wine that exudes perfumes of musk, flowers and truffles along with a layer of honey and spice. Absolutely wonderful now. A triumph of balance and deep flavors.
1968
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $700.00 96
Burgundy

11/15/95
Shows plenty of botrytis, smelling more like Sauternes than white Burgundy. Very spicy and complex, the exotic honey, spice and tropical fruit nuances coming through. Long and inviting, it stands as a unique example of great white Burgundy. Second bottle was more oxidized and a little woody.
1973
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $650.00 95
Burgundy

11/15/95
Regarded as the greatest D.R.C. Montrachet, and it's still youthful, ripe and complex. This zinger of a wine tightly packs in lemon, pineapple, pear and quince flavors. Seems leaner than it used to be, but just as lively and long. Keeps vibrating on the finish.
1966
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $1450.00 95
Burgundy

11/15/95
Difference in color between the two bottles. The lighter, fresher one showing great style and grace, a beautifully balanced, still-youthful mouthful of pear, pineapple, spice and honey. Still shows finesse behind its power. Other bottle much darker, harder and woody in flavor.
1993
La Tache
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $270.00 94
Burgundy
Cellar Selection
05/15/96
A superb tasting experience: this really builds on the palate. Elegant yet showing some richness, full of lovely plum, berry and vanilla notes. The tannins are refined in this medium- to full-bodied La Tache, but the finish is still very tannic; try it in 2006.
1982
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $600.00 94
Burgundy

11/15/95
Lean but bristling with subtle nuances of earth, tobacco, mineral and caramel notes that shine out from the core of pear and pineapple flavors. Delicious, harmonious and complete. Should keep improving through 1997.
1970
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $600.00 94
Burgundy

11/15/95
Elegant, rich and superbly balanced, neither weighty nor weak, walking a tightrope of crisp acidity and showing a range of honey, toast, vanilla, pear and sweet pea flavors. Lingers beautifully. It's ready now.
1993
Romanee-Conti
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $850.00 94
Burgundy
Cellar Selection
05/15/96
Savage, muscular and tightly knit, this offers pure Pinot fruit. Has a full range of cassis, black cherry, mineral and vanilla notes, but it also shows an austere, underripe edge of spicy, tobacco and leafy flavors. With its tough tannins and good length, this is an outstanding "masculine" red Burgundy that has the power and potential to improve into the next century.
1988
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $600.00 93
Burgundy

11/15/95
Lean and bracing, showing snappy apple and pineapple flavors and a tight overlay of spicy vanilla. Bright and youtfhul. Best from 1998 to 2000.
1983
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $750.00 92
Burgundy

11/15/95
Big, round and generous, with spicy, toasty flavors that fill the mouth with honeyed pineapple and caramel overtones. A big, powerful wine that keeps banging away on the long finish and probably has reached its best moment.
1993
Romanee St.-Vivant
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $135.00 92
Burgundy

05/15/96
Closed and tough, featuring tannic, austere character that's almost rustic. Offers plenty of redberry and blackberry flavors. Seems somewhat awkward and off-balance now, but it's a big wine and the potential is there. Try in 2005.
1985
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $850.00 91
Burgundy

11/15/95
Superbly balanced and elegant, with refined fruit and spice flavors. Everything melds together nicely. Only an edge of astringency cuts into the finish to take it down just a notch, but still outstanding.
1981
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $400.00 91
Burgundy

11/15/95
Still youthful and spicy, fresh-tasting, with smoky, tobacco-scented pear and pineapple flavors that keep zinging on the finish. Not particularly stylish for D.R.C., but flavorful and rewarding. Drinkable now.
1979
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $550.00 91
Burgundy

11/15/95
Fat, ripe and supple, this has lush, generous honey, vanilla, tobacco and pear flavors that echo on the finish. Very smooth, especially compared with some of the more acidic wines.
1972
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $575.00 91
Burgundy

11/15/95
Fat and spicy, with honey-, vanilla- and tobacco-scented pear and lemon flavors that keep singing on the finish. Not as deep as the great ones, but elegant in its own way.
1993
Echezeaux
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $95.00 90
Burgundy

05/15/96
Super vanilla, coffee, berry character, quite oaky and more like a Bordeaux than a Burgundy, but how can we fault it? Well structured and refined. Better in 2000.
1976
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $550.00 90
Burgundy

11/15/95
Firm and sturdy rather than elegant or stylish, but the spicy, smoky pear and apple flavors that echo on the finish balance beautifully. Tasty now, and it won't be getting any better.
1993
Richebourg
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $190.00 90
Burgundy

05/15/96
Austere and tough in texture now, showing a dry, tannic edge. Offers compacted blackberry, dry cherry and vanilla character, accompanied by a somewhat green flavor. This is a closed wine that needs time to come together. Try in 2005.
1993
Grands Echezeaux
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $135.00 88
Burgundy

05/15/96
Solid and fairly tannic, featuring plum, black cherry and earth character. Rather lean, with mocha, spice and toast notes on the woody finish. Lacks the supple structure of some top '93s, and the color was a bit lighter. Time should soften its taut personality; try in 2005.
1977
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $250.00 88
Burgundy

11/15/95
Crisp, spicy and lively, with hints of honey, hazelnut and a lean core of pear flavor. Lingers nicely. Feels like it can hold on for a while.
1965
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $650.00 87
Burgundy

11/15/95
Smells like a mature Sauternes, all honey, spice and toasty vanilla. It's very mature, and the flavors seem to show the age, with the honey and toast accents lingering on the finish. Smooth, drinkable, but seems little past its prime.
1984
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $400.00 85
Burgundy

11/15/95
Very crisp and lively, with the sort of juicy flavors you get from biting into fresh, slightly green pineapple slices. Lingers on the finish.
1974
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $300.00 85
Burgundy

11/15/95
Lean and a little tart, but the caramel-honey flavors sweeten the slightly metallic, citrus flavor that sneaks in on the finish. A little out of balance with the acidity, but the flavors are fine.
1992
Romanee-Conti
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $600.00 85
Burgundy

05/15/95
A solid core of fruit and tannins in a medium-bodied wine. Plum, berry and mushroom aromas and flavors, with hints of violet, brown sugar and cinnamon. Enough tannins on the finish to cellar until 1997.
1992
Grands Echezeaux
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $79.00 84
Burgundy

05/15/95
Attractive and delicate berry, cherry, violet and vanilla aromas with brown sugar and cinnamon flavors. Medium to light body, with soft tannins and a light finish. Drinkable now.
1992
La Tache
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $139.00 84
Burgundy

05/15/95
Smooth and supple in texture, medium to light in body. This delivers lovely cherry and strawberry aromas and a hint of earthiness in the spice and mocha flavors. Finishes light with fine tannins. Drinkable now.
1991
Montrachet
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $800.00 84
Burgundy

11/15/95
Very lean and hard, with tart and meager green apple flavor to balance the woody, lemony flavors. Maybe it will flesh out by 1998 or 1999.
1987
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $525.00 83
Burgundy

11/15/95
Lean and citrusy, tart and acidic enough to suggest that the intensity cannot overcome the hardness. Drinkable only with some appropriate food to tame the acidity.
1969
Montrachet White
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $900.00 83
Burgundy

11/15/95
Light, almost fragile, with a little echo of pear and vanilla. Still youthful, even a little acidic, but not a wine of any particular distinction.
1992
Richebourg
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $96.00 83
Burgundy

05/15/95
Elegant and light-bodied, the attractive berry, cherry and violet notes mingle with the cinnamon and brown sugar flavors. A pretty finish makes this quite smooth and seductive. Drinkable now.
1992
Echezeaux
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $52.00 79
Burgundy

05/15/95
Ripe but light-bodied, with pleasant spice, brown sugar, cinnamon and strawberry aromas and flavors. Light tannins and a tart finish. Disappointing. Drinkable now.
1992
Romanee St.-Vivant
Domaine De La Romanee-conti $73.00 74
Burgundy

05/15/95
Soft and supple, but very light and diluted. Offers modest fruit flavors with brown sugar and herbal accents. Not much to taste. A brownish edge signals that this is maturing quickly. Drink up fast.
