It's too late to ask either one of these men what they thought of the US government, or the Centers for Disease Control, or the Postmaster General's assurances that they were not in harm's way - even while the rich, the famous, even the Capitol police dogs - were tested for anthrax and dosed with Cipro. But it's way past time as Americans we realized that wishing doesn't make it so. Ever since the terror attacks, we have been caught up in wanting to believe the best of our government. bali terrorism Terrorism-&-war. That it will give us information we need, that it will protect us, warn us, and, if it comes to that, save us. The bitter truth is that there are no signs that this is the case. The deaths of Thomas Morris and Joseph Curseen - good, hardworking, honest men devoted to their families and communities, people more like you and me than the faces on TV will ever be, should make it clear that we are in uncharted waters with unreliable, uninformed and frequently dishonest people at the helm. This has clearly been the case since Sept. 11, when our commander in chief spent most of the day flying from bunker to bunker, rather than return to the nation's Capitol and do his job. It's been the case since the House and Senate voted to give the president unlimited power to wage war, with Rep. Barbara Lee of California asking for more evidence before bestowing such powers, the lone dissenting voice. It has been clear the Bush Administration doesn't know what it is doing since we started bombing Afghanistan, killing civilians and wreaking terror, destroying an already bleak landscape, and simultaneously dropping leaflets and food packets in a sickening parody of a humanitarian gesture. (Ask yourself, if another country were bombing your town, killing your relatives and destroying your community, would you forgive them and realize it was all for your own good if they threw in a few bundles of food and some colorful leaflets?) Our government's response to terror is to wreak terror upon others, even as they acknowledge both that terrorism is global, fluid, knows no boundaries. The administration justifies the bombing of Afghanistan by waving the flag in one hand and a photo of Osama bin Laden, terrorism's current poster boy in the other, even as it acknowledges that capturing or killing this man will bring no end to terrorism.
