Unfortunately, the software(s) that actually get the job done cost between $20 to $250. For example, I recently saw a version of Spybot on sale at an office supply store for a measly $79.99 (ha ha ha). How altruistic of them to place a product on sale for $79.99.......a product that anyone/ anywhere can get for free.

If I seem a little cynical it's because a little over three years ago my brother Karl bought me my first computer with internet access. He had paid in access of $700 to purchase this computer. My other computer, which he had also given to me as a gift (way back when) was so old that it could not process any of the modern day software that would allow me to have internet access. So I was never able to access the internet. I was a virtual slave to public access computer domains.

So imagine how excited I was to get my first personal computer...with internet access. It was wonderful.......until.

At first I didn't get all that many pop up ads. But after a couple of weeks I was getting 20 to 30 pop up ads per online visit. Then things really got out of hand. I started getting multiple hundreds of pop up ads per online visit. It was horrible. They were coming faster than I could delete them. For every one that I was able to delete, I would get at least 10 to 20 more in its' stead.

Dismayed and confused, I started going back to the public access computer labs.(How depressing!). Here I was with a brand-new computer, yet I couldn't get the enjoyment out of it that I was supposed to.

Perplexed and dismayed, I told a friend of mine named Anthony, who happens to know an awful lot about computers.

Anthony promptly informed me--without hesitation--that I (or rather my computer) was infected. I promptly informed him that he was wrong because I had already installed all of the best antivirus software(s) available, such as: Windows XP, Google Tool Bar, Norton Antivirus, & McAfee, and none of these brand named software(s)had ever informed me that my computer was infected. They would simply send reports that stated that certain files were at risk.

(Under these brand name software domains, I remember at one point in time, I had over 80 files that were at risk.).

Anthony began to laugh cynically as he shook his head from side to side. He then calmly stated, with a slight hint of humor in his voice, "Like I said before, you're infected."

Well, to make a long story short I took his advise and promptly installed a few of the "quote unquote" underground antivirus software(s) that he had instructed me to install. It took less than one hour before I was pleasanty surprised.

After months of frustration, my computer was once again running at peak efficiency.

Since then, I've been absolutely amazed at all the hoopla surrounding this issue (tv ads, news reports, Congressional legislation, etc.).
