Leaflets

When writing leaflets, be sure to:

  • Pick out the main points of your argument
  • State these points as clearly and concisely as possible
  • Choose a headline that makes it clear what you are campaigning for/against, and reinforce this message in the first paragraph
  • Include your group's name and contact details; preferably e-mail and snail mail addresses and a phone number
  • Provide people with some action they can take: write to company, council or whoever, boycott company, etc.
  • Written last year for an ongoing campaign

[Venue name] Stadium supports circus cruelty

Many people now accept that the use of animals in circuses is cruel and outdated. An investigation in 1997 found abuse of some kind or another in the majority of British circuses. For this reason, animal circuses are banned from council land in [town]. However, --- Stadium (aka --- Speedway) still makes them welcome.

A recent visitor to Coventry Stadium was [owner]s --- --- Circus. Laceys business was previously called Circus ---: physical and verbal abuse of animals was found by an undercover investigator to be standard practice during the 1997 summer season. In one incident an injured lioness was kept hidden during a visit from the RSPCA. A vet had not been called . The name of the circus may have changed: the people havent! A year after the report was published, [owner] admitted on TV to having shot his bears , making clear that circuses kill surplus animals.

    [group's name and contact details]

Older leaflet: the circus in question is a permanent building, where some of the animal accomodation was underground. The are now animal-free, showing that activism works.

    The [circus name]: Underground cruelty

Circuses claim that their animals are well cared for and happy. The evidence says otherwise. An investigation by Animal Defenders in 1997 uncovered widespread abuse of animals in British circuses: the ---- was no exception.

The main animal quarters at the --- are underground. The investigator observed horses kept in individual stalls of approx. 2.5 x 5 metres with a concrete or brick floor. They were in these stalls for over 23 hours a day. The outside exercise yard was rarely used.

During the 1997 season, lion tamer --- --- was filmed beating lionesses and forcing one to perform while heavily pregnant. These were among the animals said by the [circus]s owner to be well treated.

Recently the --- has only featured domestic animals: however, contrary to the claims of some animal trainers, this is no less cruel. The Animal Defenders investigation found that animals such as horses and camels suffered just as much as their more exotic counterparts. They were still trained through fear, using whips and spikes, and kept in equally inadequate conditions.

For these reasons we are asking you to BOYCOTT THE [CIRCUS] and other circuses which use animals.

Please write to the owner of the ---: [Owner's name, address of circus] Ask him to stick to paid, willing human performers.
