As the Revolutionary War approached, there was a split among the Mohawk Valley families over their loyalty to England or for the pursuit of the New World independence.  (There are numerous historical accounts of the family turmoils over this period that are depicted and available in the historical literature of the area).  Those wanting to remain loyal to England migrated west, across the Niagara River into what is now the southwestern section of Ontario, Canada.  There they set up households in hopes that some day they might return to their Mohawk Valley homes following the put down of the independence seekers.  History shows this didn't happen.  The settlements in Canada turned into new homes for most of them, and new Nellis (Nelles) settlements grew and exist to this day.  It follows therefore that most of the Canadian Nelles lines are related to the Mohawk Valley Nellis lines.

The Canadian Nelles's also have an association, the Nelles Family Association which has its own rich Nelles history which ties to and parallels the Mohawk Valley Nellis history. And they have membership, produce newsletters, and have annual reunions.
