BUFFALO BILL
His Family, Friends, Fame, Failures and Fortunes
(Out of Print)

~ By Nellie Snyder Yost ~

Nellie Snyder Yost was born in a sodhouse in northwest Lincoln County, Nebraska,
and has spent most of her life on either her parents' ranch or the ranch she shared with
her first husband. She grew up in the area where Buffalo Bill Cody made his home and at
age six saw him perform with his Wild West Exhibition. Her book, Buffalo Bill. His Family,
Friends, Fame, Failures and Fortunes,
reveals how the wild west hero burned his image
on the memories of the people of north central Nebraska, including that of the author. From
local newspapers of Cody's time, interviews conducted from 1939 to 1940 through the Federal
Writes Project, and her own interviews with living area residents, including her father, who
remembered him, she has written an account that strikes a balance between the exaggerations of
the legends and the criticism of the 1930s and 1940s. After publication of a lengthy interview with
the author in the Chicago Tribune, she was invited to New York to be interviewed by David Hartman
on GOOD MORNING AMERICA: the program aired on February 22, 1980.
