Added Liquid Snake's history as related in the Briefing menu of MGS. 001. Introduction ----------------- Newly restyled mostly complete timeline for the Metal Gear series. Now in the style presented by Metal Gear Solid 3. Only the data directly relevant to the games and its characters with a specific year are presented. Whereever possible, the timeline from MGS3's manual and script is quoted. Obviously events after MGS3's coverage are supplied by information from the following games. References to Snake will use the full codename to help differentiate between them. Also, this entire text should obviously be considered spoiler information, so if you haven't played all the Metal Gear games and don't want the stories spoiled, don't read. 002. Timeline ------------- 1942 ---- -U.S. Army's research division begins development of the atomic bomb (the Manhattan Project). Otacon's grandfather participates. -In the midst of World War II, The Boss forms the Cobra Unit. 1945 ---- -Atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Otacon's father born. 1947 ---- -The Boss disbands the Cobra Unit. 1950 ---- -Outbreak of the Korean War (lasts until 1953). Naked Snake becomes The Boss' disciple. 1954 ---- -Hydrogen Bomb tested on Bikini Island Atoll. Naked Snake is a subject and rendered sterile bacause of the experiment. 1959 ---- -Naked Snake and the Boss part ways. 1960 ---- -Two NSA code breakers defect to the Soviet Union. One of them is Adamska Ivan, code named ADAM. 1962 ---- -U.S. begins producing "Davy Crockett" portable nuclear missiles. -Dr. Nikolai Sokolov requests asylum in the west. -The Boss kills the Sorrow in Tselinoyarsk. 1964 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004 Konami) ----------------------------------------------------- -Naked Snake is sent to Tselinoyarsk to rescue Dr. Sokolov. Virtuous Mission. -The Boss joins Colonel Volgin's forces and delivers two "Davy Crocket" tactical nuclear weapons to the rogue group. Dr. Sokolov is recaptured. Colonel Volgin uses one of the weapons on the Soviet site at Tselinoyarsk. -One week later, Naked Snake returns to Tselinoyarsk to get Dr. Sokolov out, kill The Boss and thereby prove the U.S. did not attack Tselinoyarsk with a "Davy Crocket" nuclear bomb. Operation Snake Eater. -Naked Snake kills the remaining members of the Cobra Unit, including The Boss, kills Colonel Volgin and destroys the Shagohod. -Ocelot escapes with Aleksandr Granin's plans for bipedal tanks (REX and RAY) and the data concerning the locations of the Philosopher's Legacy. -Naked Snake is given the title Big Boss. 1965 ---- -Sigint joins ARPA. He takes part in the development of the ARPAnet, which would go online in 1969. 1969 ---- -Eva disappears without a trace in Hanoi. 1970 ---- -Para-Medic establishes the nation's first paramedic system in Seattle, Washington. -Major Zero disbands FOX. -The United States accumulates the remainder of the Legacy. The U.S. branch of "Philosophers" changes its name to the "Patriots." 1971 ---- -Carrying on the traditions of Major Zero and his FOX unit, Big Boss establishes FOXHOUND. 1972 ---- -The "Les Enfants Terribles" project. The Sons of Big Boss are born in the US. Liquid Snake is moved to England. 1986 ---- -Nastasha Romanenko and her family are showered by radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in Prypiat. 1989 ---- -Frank Hunter seeks asylum in the US with his lover, Natasha Markova. Her green card is inexplicably denied. They make a failed attempt to cross the border illegally. 1990 ---- -Nastasha Romanenko's parents die as a result of working in the clean up of Chernobyl. Nastasha moves to the US. -As a member of the British Special Air Service, Liquid Snake infiltrates Iraq to destroy mobile SCUD missile launchers. He is taken as a POW by the Iraqies and declared MIA. 1992 ---- -Nastasha Romanenko joins the DIA. 1994 ---- -Liquid Snake is rescued by the US government and returned to his country. 1995 - Metal Gear (1987 Konami) ------------------------------- -Solid Snake is sent on his first mission; to rescue Grey Fox, report information about Metal Gear and destroy it. Operation Intrude N313. -Solid Snake destroys Metal Gear TX-55, rescues Grey Fox and Big Boss is presumed dead. -NATO conducts an air raid to destroy any remains of Outer Heaven. Civilian casualties are high. -Solid Snake leaves FOXHOUND after 6 months of service to live in the Canadian wilderness. -Nastasha Romanenko leaves the DIA, works as a freelance analyst and begins writing for Magazines and naval publications. 1996 ---- -Nastasha Romanenko attends the world's first nationally hosted nuclear weapon abolition proposal group, the Canberra Committee. 1997 ---- -A cyborg ninja named Black Color emerges on the world stage as a mercenary. -The military democracy of Zanzibar Land is formed. 1999 - Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990 Konami) ----------------------------------------------- -Solid Snake is called back into service of FOXHOUND to infiltrate the newly formed nation of Zanzibar Land and rescue Dr. Kio Marv, the inventor of an alternative oil source: Oilix. Operation Intrude F014. -Natasha Markova is killed by Grey Fox. -Solid Snake destroys Metal Gear D and kills Big Boss. Grey Fox is presumed dead. -Solid Snake leaves FOXHOUND once again, this time to live in isolation in Alaska. -Grey Fox is revived and kept drugged for use in Dr. Clark's gene therapy experiments. 2000 ---- -Liquid Snake joins and becomes Battle Leader of FOXHOUND. -Emma Emmerich assists a group of hackers and NSA insiders in shutting down the NSA's facility at Fort Meade for 73 hours. The NSA overhauls their security and moves the massive data gathering operation to a secret isolated facilty. 2002a - Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (2000 Konami) ---------------------------------------------------- -In an alternate universe or perhaps a VR mission, Solid Snake is sent to infiltrate the fortress Galaude in the nation of Gindra in central Africa to destroy Metal Gear Gander. 2003 ---- -An explosion kills Dr. Clark in his lab. Grey Fox escapes. 2004 ---- -Peter Stillman is involved in a bombing accident and loses partial mobility in one leg. 2005 - Metal Gear Solid (1998 Konami) ------------------------------------- -Meryl Silverburgh joins the Metal Gear REX test exercise. -Mcdonnel Miller is murdered at his home in Alaska. -Solid Snake is called back into service of FOXHOUND to infiltrate the nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island. His mission is to rescue the Chief of DARPA (Donald Anderson), the President of ArmsTech (Kenneth Baker) and to investigate the terrorist's capability to deliver a nuclear strike. -Solid Snake destroys Metal Gear REX, Liquid Snake kills Grey Fox and Liquid Snake is presumed killed by the FoxDIE biological virus. -Revolver Ocelot escapes with Metal Gear REX's test data and sells it on the black market. The data to make Metal Gear becomes available to any nation or group interested. -Emma Emmerich is recruited by the NSA. 2007 - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001 Konami) --------------------------------------------------------- -Solid Snake, working for the U.N.-reckognized group "Philanthropy", infiltrates the tanker ship Discovery to retrieve evidence of the U.S. Marines' Metal Gear RAY. -Evidence of Metal Gear RAY is released over the internet. Metal Gear RAY is stolen by Revolver Ocelot and Solid Snake is presumed dead. -Emma Emmerich resigns from the NSA. -Raiden and Rosemary meet and begin a relationship. 2009 - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001 Konami) --------------------------------------------------------- -The Dead Cell unit is devastated, only three members remain alive to be branded traitors. -Raiden, new member of FOXHOUND, is sent to infiltrate the Big Shell, rescue President of the United States James Johnson and prevent terrorists from blowing up the Shell and causing an ecological disaster. -President James Johnson is killed by Revolver Ocelot. -Revolver Ocelot, under the control of the mind of Liquid Snake, escapes in the original piloted Metal Gear RAY. Solid Snake manages to attach a tracking device to the fleeing Gear. -Solid Snake and Raiden destroy Arsenal Gear and its horde of drone Metal Gear RAYs. Raiden kills Solidus Snake. 003.
