Kodoku no Kokoro

Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing. I wish I did.....but I don't. *pout* Loosely translated, the title of the fic means "Lonely Hearts".
Oh, I wanted to say thank you and dedicate this story to Jade Akutenshi (wonderful webmistress of The Maxwell Church) and Neko-chan (my friend and fellow author on ff.net *Neko-chan pops up and huggles her black tail, her head cocked cutely*) for your encouragement and comments on my fics. Without your compliments and excitement over my stories, I would've stopped writing after my first yaoi fic. And, because of you both, I now feel comfortable enough to write my very first long fic (and it's yaoi, too!). So, thank you!!!! *glomp* (And, because of your help, you'll both appear in this fic.....) Oh, and Neko-chan: Meow? *snickers* You'll get it later..... Hey, Jade: Ever consider becoming a hotel owner?
Warning: yaoi, shounen-ai, 1+2, 3+4+5 (maybe....it depends...*grins*)
Chapter One
Heero quickly carried the unconscious Duo to another alleyway. He had the pilot of Deathscythe Hell slung over a shoulder, and was finding it very hard not to trip on the long braid as he ran from hiding spot to hiding spot.
Stupid baka...should've cut it off when I had the chance.... Heero thought darkly, mumbling oaths in his native Japanese. Sparing a glance over his shoulder, he noticed how the rich chestnut color had beautiful streaks of blonde in it. All in all, Duo's hair reminded him of a vibrant beam of sunshine. Then again......maybe I wouldn't cut it off....
He grunted in effort and he shifted the braided American to a more comfortable spot on his shoulder. Despite his petite appearance, Duo was heavy!
Probably all those damn cheeseburgers...... Heero glared into the darkness as he thought this. With another grunt, he made his way deeper into the alley. He froze when a trash can rattled, his hand automatically going for his gun before he remembered that the OZ soldiers had taken it away. Creeping slowly into the deeper shadows, Heero crouched, waiting for whatever it was to come out of hiding.
Gray eyes stared at him. Heero blinked in surprise. The eyes copied his gesture, a look of unholy amusement in their depths. Slowly, out of the darkest shadows, an black cat sauntered. It looked up at him, it's head cocked.
"Meow?" it asked, amusement shining in it's gray eyes. Heero scowled down at it, thinking dark thoughts.
"Shoo! Move it, cat!" Heero hissed
The cat just meowed again, it's tail twitching as it surveyed Heero and the unconscious boy draped over his shoulder. It seemed to smirk; and, unsheathing it's claws, it jumped onto Heero's free shoulder, refusing to let go. After several minutes struggle with the black cat, Heero sighed and gave up. The cat refused to let go. And that meant that he was stuck with it.
Growling in frustration, and now cursing the cat along with Duo, Heero continued on his way. After half and hour of walking, he came to the front of a hotel. It looked run down, but the sign said 'Vacancy.' At that moment, Heero didn't care if it was flashy or seedy; he had to put Duo down somewhere and tend to the boy's and his own wounds.
He walked through the small door, not caring about the whispers he heard as he walked to the front desk. A young girl, about fifteen, looked up from the magazine she was reading. She had long brown hair that came to her waist; it was braided, like Duo's. Her eyes matched her hair, they were a warm chocolate brown and were framed by long black lashes. The name tag on her baggy lavender shirt read 'Crystal.'
"How can I help you?" she asked, not even blinking when Heero shifted Duo to another position on his shoulder and when the black cat peeked around Heero's spiky hair to stare, unblinking, at her.
"I need a room for tonight," Heero replied, giving her his best glare. She raised an eyebrow at him, not scared at all. Heero growled and waited for her to tell him the price. She did, and he accepted it. Tossing him a key, the girl watched him stomp his way up the stairs that led to the second level, where his room was.
She raised an eyebrow, grinning faintly. I've never had a customer with a cat and a guy slung over his shoulder before, she thought, amused. They must be into the kinky stuff......
Heero kicked open the flimsy door with one sneaker-clad foot. He gave a sigh of relief when he gently put his friend on the lumpy mattress. The cat followed Duo, sitting by his head. Glaring darkly at the cat, Heero made his way to the bathroom, gathering towels and washcloths. Quickly, he wet them and returned to Duo's side. One by one, he cleaned the young boy's wounds, making sure that there was no infection. Duo was still unconscious throughout the whole entire process. Once he had seen to Duo, Heero began to clean his own wounds, his face blank. Heero didn't even wince when he had to clean a particularly deep and nasty looking cut. Finally, when Heero finished with his last wound, Duo began to stir. The cat plopped on his chest and began to lick him, urging him to consciousness.
With a groan and a hand to his head, which throbbed, Duo sat up, unceremoniously dumping the small cat on her rump. The cat gave him an insulted look, Duo staring at her curiously. She ignored him and wandered over to Heero, twining between his legs.
"Where.....where are we, Heero?" Duo asked, looking around in wonder. The last thing he remembered was being tortured in a cell not far from Heero's.
Heero's gaze darkened, and he looked down at the cat. "Well.....as you know, when we were on that infiltration mission, we were caught. OZ officers had recognized us. They knew that we were Gundam pilots. So, they captured us. They tortured you, hoping to get information out of you. But, after you had passed out, Quatre, Wufei, and Trowa had come. They got me out of my cell, and together we rescued you. They were able to get Wing Zero and Deathscythe Hell out of OZ's hangers. Don't worry, the Gundams are fine." Heero assured Duo after seeing the panicked look on his face. "But the others want us to lay low for a while.....they want to make ourselves scarce. They'll notify us when we're needed. Until then, I guess we're on a vacation."
Duo grinned, then winced when the smile stretched the many cuts and bruises on his face. "Itai....this hurts......" he complained, looking up at Heero, his eyes wide.
Heero shook his head in annoyance. "Baka....of course it hurts. You're hurt."
Duo pouted. Noticing a twitching to his left, he looked down and his gaze collided with the cat's gray eyes. "What's with the cat?" Duo asked, interested despite himself.
Heero scowled. "It came with me when I was looking for a hotel, or somewhere safe we could go. I was in an alleyway, and it just showed up. I don't know what we're going to do about it, though."
Looking excited, Duo asked, "Can we keep it...please Heero?"
Sighing, Heero glared at Duo from under his bangs. Duo just gave him the puppy-dog face that he had learned from Quatre. "Fine....I guess we could," he finally ground out. Duo grinned and leaned forward, wiggling his fingers at the small cat. The black cat just sniffed his fingers and twitched it's tail, annoyed. Duo looked insulted, glaring at the cat. Heero saw this and covered a grin with a hand. "What are you going to call it?" he finally asked.
Duo thought for a moment. Then, "Neko-chan!"
