**Prologue**

"Run! Get away from here and don't come back!!"

The scream was firm and fierce. The weeping child only shook her head in refusal to what her mother demanded. The mother shut her eyes and embraced her crying daughter.

"Mommyplease I want you and Daddy to come with me!" pleaded the little girl.
"We can't, my child. I'm sorry. Your father and I have something we need to take care of." The mother's tone was much more calm and soothing, but she wept behind her child's head.

The small girl coughed as she choked on the smoke that hovered above their heads. The small home was engulfed in flames. The thatch roof was burning like wild fire and was about to collapse on top of them. The mother's heart pained with the thought of losing her beloved child. She refused to let the girl go, but deep down she knew that it had to be done. She shut her eyes tightly and held her daughter out at arm's length.

"You know where you must go?" she asked the sobbing juvenile.
"Yes." The girl nodded.
"Here. Take this with you and make sure that you keep it close to you and not to let anyone have it." The woman handed her a slender item wrapped in a blanket.

Its length was about the same as the little girl's height. The girl wrapped her arms around it, holding it close to her small body. Her mother affectionately rubbed her arm and smiled. Her tear-soaked cheeks glimmered in the light of the flames.

"I love you, Mommy. And can you give Daddy a kiss for me?" the 6 year-old girl asked through her cries.

The woman let out a half sob, half laugh at her daughter's request. Once more she threw herself on her little girl enfolding the child in her arms one last time.

"Of course I will" She struggled to utter.

She kissed the small forehead and picked up the child. She held her out the back window of the house. After the girl was gently and safely on the ground again, she turned and faced her mother.

"Now go! Keep running and don't look back!!" The woman yelled.

The girl hugged the cloaked item closer to her body and ran. She was running as fast as she could away from the trouble behind her, away from her home, away from her family forever. When she was almost out of site the mother turned her attention back into the house. As soon as she did her husband was thrown in through the smoldering wooden door.

"Nicholas!!" she screamed out.

He slammed onto the floor with a hard thud. The fall knocked the wind out of his lungs. He coughed, fighting to regain the oxygen he had lost, but choked when all he could receive was smoke. The woman ran to her fallen husband and cradled his head. He held onto her arm around his neck and strove to get on his feet once again. She aided him to his feet and held on for balance. A figure stepped into the doorway. His eyes were cold and callous, and on the side of his face he sported a deep gash he'd acquired from the end of the blade that Nicholas held.

"You foolish people." The man scoffed, "You will not provide me with what I need, so you will not tell anyone with what I want to know." He threatened.

The cruel figure lifted the tip of his sword and slightly waved it in the air. The woman moved in front of her husband and held him tightly. The dark silhouette thrust his blade forward and Nicholas shoved his wife out of the steel's path. She fell to the cold ground and screamed when she saw the blade resting in its final place.

"Ni-Nicholas NOOOO!!!!!" She screamed in terror.

The little girl fell to the ground, out of breath. She tightly shut her eyes when she heard the shriek of a familiar voice. A single tear rolled down her cheek.

"Daddy" she whispered to herself.

Jerking up from where she had lain, face drenched in sweat, breath coarse in her chest, she stared wide-eyed into the darkness. Relaxing slowly as she realized where she was, she sighed softly. She crossed her legs and rested her arms on them as she let her head hang low. She sighed again and moved the hair out of her face. Suddenly, she heard a voice in her mind.

What's wrong small one?

"I had that dream again." She answered it out loud.

A warm body came up against hers. It wrapped itself around her and she accepted it with open arms. The mid-teen girl leaned against it and closed her eyes as she ran her hand down its side and over the bumpy scales.

Do not fear, my child. I shall let nothing harm you.

The girl smiled as she felt a nuzzle on her shoulder, and drifted back into a silent slumber.
