Author’s Notes:

This is kinda late, but I want to say thank you to diggie who said ‘cheer up!’. To hell with all the assholes in the world who are so insignificant to everybody else because I will. Thanks, diggie! This fic was greatly inspired by a moron I live with when he left this message on our answering machine: “You’ll die in… seven days. See ‘ya in hell, buddy but, before that… please leave a message.”. He is now facing two weeks of juvenile punishment *snickers*. Way to go, dee!

            R-r-ring…

            R-r-ring…

            Click.

“Saitou here. Leave a message. I want no nonsense or I’ll kill you first thing in the morning.”

            Beep.

Chuckling. “Well, hello to you, too, Hajime.”

            Click.

            “Ahou…”

“How many times have I told you not to call me that?”

Snickers. “I will when you stop being one. What do you want?”

Pause. “I have something to tell you…”

            “Really?”

“Um… yeah.” Pause. “You know, I love you.”

            “Hn.”

Flustered pause. “I know you know but, um…” Deep breath. “Aoshi called. Him and Kenshin are divorced and he’s… he’s flying here tomorrow and…”

            Silence.

            “Fine.”

            “’Jime, listen, will ‘ya?”
            “…”

            “C’mon, man.” Deep breath. “It’s – it’s not you… I just – it’s…” Pause. “I miss him and…”

“No matter how many times he’s hurt you and you’re still going back to him.”

            “Hajime… I love you…”

“Not enough. You love him more.”

“He was my first, for god’s sakes! We never even had any agreement about us and…”

            “Ahou.”

            “Don’t call me that!”

            “Ahou. Ahou. Ahou.”

            Click.

            Beep, beep, beep, beep…

            “Hajime?”

            Beep, beep, beep, beep…

            “Fuck you!”

            R-r-ring…

            Click.

            “Leave a message, damn it!”

            Beep.

Surprised pause. “Hey, boss. It’s Cho and um… the Commissioner was asking when you’ll be back to work and that…”

            Click.

“I’ll be back when I get back.”

“Boss!”. Relieved sigh. “ I got all the reports in and…”

            “Sano in yet?”

            “He’s on vacation, ain’t he?”

            Silence.

            “Uh- boss…?”

            “What?”

Frightened pause. “Ah- well. I’ll tell the Comish and…”

            Click.

            Beep, beep, beep, beep…

            “… have a nice day.”

            R-r-ring…

            Click.

            “Leave a message, damn it!”

            Beep.

Indignant pause. “Of all the… Hajime, this is Megumi. Where the hell are you, brother? I’ve been calling and calling and all I get is your damned answering machine. You better change that goddamned message or I’m going there and smashing your phone to bits. Do you hear me?”

            Silence.

Deep breath. “It’s Sano, isn’t it?”

            Silence.

“I saw him yesterday… with Aoshi… he said to tell you that he’s sorry…”

Deep sigh. “I don’t want to interfere but, I’m your sister. You keep saying Sano doesn’t matter, that you and him are on testing grounds but, I don’t see it that way, Aniki. If you really love him, like I know you do, then go to him. I think he went back to Aoshi because of your seeming indifference. Sano’s good for you, brother. But, your fucking pride always gets in the way.”

Deep breath. “I’ll see you on Monday, ne?”

            Silence.

“If I don’t I’ll haul you out of there and kick you down the street! And change that stupid message.”

            Click.

            R-r-ring…

            Click.

“Saitou here. Please leave a message. Thank you.”

            Beep.

Silence. “Hajime, it’s me. Please pick up.”

            Silence.

Sigh. “You’re still mad, right? Okay, I don’t blame you but, I just had to tell you that…”

Pause. “I’m going with Aoshi… next week. We’re leaving for the States. Y’know how much I wanted to go there, right? Anyway…”

Deep breath. “I love you, Hajime. I really, really do but, you don’t love me. So, I guess it’s best if I go with Aoshi. He’ll take care of me and…”

            Silence.

            “…bye.”

            Click.

            R-r-ring…

            Click.

“Saitou died and went to hell. Leave a message and Satan’s little demons will make sure he gets it.”

            Beep.

“Where are you? Where the hell are you, Hajime? Are you listening to me, Aniki?!”

            Silence.

“Damn it, Saitou Hajime! You told me you don’t give a fuck if Sano leaves you but, you’re acting like your Shinsen patrol was obliterated.”

Muffled sobs. “Aniki, please… I just want to know if you’re okay. I want to see that you haven’t reverted back to your psychotic self ever since Sano left.”

            Silence.

            Deep breath.

“Aniki… do you still love Sano?”

            Silence.

“Because if you do… there’s still time. They haven’t left yet… just tell him. Tell him you love him and I just know he’ll come running back to you.”

            Silence.

“Ne, brother? You’ll tell him, won’t you? Because if your damned pride keeps you from saying those three words… you’ll lose him.”

            Pause. “Maybe forever…”

            Click.

            Beep.

            Silence.

            “He did, hunh?”

            Pause. “’Jime… please pick up. It’s Sano…”

            Click.

            Silence.

“’Jime? Are you there? Hello? Hello?”

            “Ahou.”

Deep sigh. “You have no idea how much I’ve missed that.”

            Silence.

            “Um… h-how are you?”

            Silence.

Flustered pause. “Okay, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked. Actually, I wanted to say… that I’m leaving and…”

            Silence.

            “Hajime, please talk to me.”

            “Ahou.”

Deep sigh. “Say it again, will’ya?”

            “Ahou.”

Deep breath. “I wanted it to last, ‘Jime… really I did. But, you didn’t… so it’s better this way, ne, cop?”

            “…”

            “I guess I better go. I don’t want to take…”

            “Ahou ga.”

“Is that all you have to say, you bastard cop?! I’m going fucking emotional here, the least you can do is be civil enough and say goodbye properly, damn it…!”

            “I don’t want to.”

            “What?”
            Snort. “I said I don’t want to.”

            Pause. “Why not?”

Deep breath. “Because… I don’t… want you to go.”

            “…’Jime…?”

            “I love you…”

            Silence.

            Deep, deep sigh. “Again, Hajime…”

            “… I love you.”

            Breath. “You mean that?”

            Snort. “Of course, I do.”

“Then, why do you look so scared, Hajime? Did you think I wouldn’t believe you? That it’s too late…?”

            “Hn. I’m not… scared.”

“Yes, you are. You’re grabbing that armchair like you’re gonna fall over if you let go.”

            “W-what? How did you…?”
Chuckles. “I’m right behind you, cop. I can see your reflection in the mirror.”

            Silence.

            Shuffles.

            “Hi, ‘Jime.”

            “S-Sano…”

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Hey, hold it… take it easy… mmpphh…”

Shuffling. A thud here and there. Sloppy, wet noises.

            “’Jimeeeeee…!”

            Moaning. Groaning. Panting. Deep breaths.

Chuckles. “You forgot to hang up the phone, old man.”

            “Fuck it.”

Laughter. “Now, I realized I really missed your psychotic, grumpy self.”

            “Shut up.”

            Muffled moans. Kissing noises.

            Silence.

“You have the most amazing eyes, ‘Jime.”

“Hn. And you have the most talented mouth.”

            “Thanks.” Pause. “Hey!”

            Snickers.

            Silence.

“Y’know… Aoshi doesn’t really stand a chance against you.”

            “Hn.”

“Yeah. I just wanted your sorry ass to miss me.”

            “It worked.”

            “You bet.”

            Kissing sounds.

“Ow! What the hell was that?!”

            “Your cellphone…”

            Click.

            Beep, beep, beep, beep…
