This
group of pictures shows some detail on the benchwork.
We
wanted modules that were lightweight and easy to transport,
in
addition to being easy to set up.
Instead
of the recommended angular layout for the corner module,
we
designed a removable 2'x2' section which connects to a 2'x4'
to
make the corner. In retrospect, we needed to take more care
when
creating the joint and make darn sure it is square before
screwing
down the top!! It makes for a slightly wavy joint, but
nothing
the trains can't handle.
For
legs, we opted for PVC pipe construction. This is another great
idea
in theory, but something of a minor disaster in practice. The
PVC
legs are cheap & light as hoped, but a little flimsy, even when
connected
together. But I blame that on our choice for a receiver.
We
used 1-1/2" pipe and 2" pipe receivers installed in the framework.
A
better choice would be a drilled woodblock for a snug fit.

Here
we can see two of our group detailing one of the corners.
The
cut-out section will become a small stream before they are
all
done. By GATS, it looked great!
