Zondeki named in SA ODI squad SOURCE: Supercricket - 24/11/02

Monde Zondeki has been included in the 14-man South African squad for the five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka which starts at the Wanderers next Wednesday.

There was, however, no place for Neil McKenzie, Gary Kirsten, Daryll Cullinan or Steve Elworthy but there were recalls for Nick Boje and Boeta Dippenaar.

Zondeki, who was selected on the basis of 12 domestic matches, will not be considered for the matches though.

"We have identified his potential," said national convenor of selectors Omar Henry on Saturday. "He's there to learn more about the team and the national set up." Henry added that national coaches Eric Simons and Corrie van Zyl would work with the young paceman in the next week.

Zondeki, who possesses plenty of raw pace, has been accused of being rather wayward in his short career.

"Playing for SA A today is just the start of the process," said Henry. "We are still going to refine him." There was also a place in the side for the desperately out of form Lance Klusener, who managed just a single for the A side against Sri Lanka on Saturday.

A question mark though hangs over the availability of Jonty Rhodes.

Rhodes pulled a hamstring playing for Natal against North West on Friday night.

Should Rhodes not be declared fit in time for Wednesday's clash, the selectors may turn to one of those players unlucky not to have made the side.

McKenzie, in particular, may feel aggrieved at his exclusion.

After steering the crumbling South African line up to victory in the second Test last week, McKenzie batted beautifully in making 21 from 23 balls before he was quite spectacularly caught at backward point on Saturday.

Asked whether the selectors had been sorely tempted to select Mckenzie, Henry replied: "We were tempted to include quite a few of them.

"The difference between some of these players is so slim that it's quite scary. But you have to look at what each player brings to the party and manage it." The chances of the make up of the team changing are quite good though.

South Africa plays 10 One Day Internationals in a row against both Sri Lanka and Pakistan and Henry stated that the majority of the squad for those matches would be made up of those players selected for SA A and the national squad announced on Saturday.

SA Squad: Shaun Pollock (captain), Mark Boucher, Nicky Boje, Boeta Dippenaar, Allan Donald, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis, Lance Klusener, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Ontong, Jonty Rhodes, Graeme Smith, Monde Zondeki.
