Langer punishes SA A

Australia A captain Justin Langer and a glut of extras combined to condemn South Africa A to their fifth limited overs loss in six cricket games in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
Chasing SA A's competitive 255 for eight, Australia cruised to a four wicket victory with 13 balls to spare. The visitors were aided enormously in their chase by South Africa conceding a staggering 32 extras which included 10 wides and 11 no balls.

Australia were struggling somewhat at 130 for four when Langer, who usually opens the innings, came in at No 6. He immediately set about putting Australia ahead of the required run rate and laid the foundation for Australia's win by making 49. Having reached 300 runs in just five knocks - the East London clash was rained out - and just one shy of another half century, Langer edged Mfuneko Ngam to wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile to give the locals some hope.

That hope was immediately dispelled by Ryan Campbell though who tore into Ngam that same over, hitting three boundaries. Campbell ended undefeated on 44 while Damien Wright made 15 not out.

South Africa A was able to post that reasonably challenging total thanks to some lusty blows late in the innings from Robin Peterson and his Eastern Province team-mate Justin Kemp. The South Africans were guilty of batting too slowly in the middle order following a solid 67 run partnership for the second wicket between the Northerns Titans pair of Jacques Rudolph and Martin van Jaarsveld.

The pair consolidated the innings after the early loss of Loots Bosman with the total on 12.

Rudolph top scored with a patient 76, before being needlessly run out by his captain, Neil McKenzie, just when the home side needed to push on.

McKenzie redeemed himself somewhat with his knock of 47 off 68 balls, which was ended by a fine catch from Andrew Symonds at mid-on off the bowling Greg Blewett. In the meantime, Peterson was having a go at everything and it paid off with his 45 coming off only 39 balls, while Kemp made a quick-fire 15 from nine balls to help push the score beyond the 250 run mark.

Nathan Bracken was the pick of the visitors attack snapping up four wickets -- including the key scalps of Peterson and Kemp -- for 43 runs in his nine overs.
