Match against Aussies is a washout
Source: IOL - September 13, 2002

The fifth limited-overs match between the South Africa "A" and the touring Australia "A" was abandoned without a ball being bowled at Buffalo Park Friday.

Heavy rains over East London during the past two weeks have left the outfield soggy and conditions were soft underfoot.

The two umpires, Ian Howell and Brian Jerling anounced officially just after 2pm that they were not satisfied with the conditions and had handed the field over to the two captains, Neil McKenzie of South Africa "A" and Justin Langer who then agreed to call off the match.

"The players are concerned aboout injuries so early in the season and a player could easily get injured in these conditions," Howell said.

McKenzie expressed his disappointment that play was abandoned. "It's very disappointing for the guys... they were all raring to go, and we would have liked to have won the last three and at least pull back to 4-3.

"We'll go all out to win the next two," McKenzie said.

The teams now proceed to Bloemfontein when a day match will be played on Sunday.

The final game of the series is in Pietermartitzburg next Wednesday. - Sapa
