McKenzie
named in Northerns squad
April 07 2002
Pretoria - South African top order batsman Neil McKenzie
has been named in the Northerns
Titans perliminary squad of 14 for the SuperSport Series
final against KwaZulu-Natal in
Kingsmead starting from Thursday.
The 26-year-old McKenzie will be joined in the squad by
fast bowlers Greg Smith and Friedel de
Wet as the only changes from the Titans side that lost by
nine wickets to Easterns in Benoni a
month ago.
The squad is expected to be trimmed to 12 men on Monday,
a day before the Titans departure
to the love-hate Kingsmead ground.
McKenzie, who has only played twice for Northerns this
summer, is expected to bolster the
Titans top order with his five-day experience.
The right-handed batsman has had a reasonably good run
with the national team stroking 637
runs at an average of 39.8 in just 10 Test matches.
However, his inclusion in the side might spell disaster
for young Johan Myburgh, who has
regained his form by scoring 182 runs in the last two
games against Western Province and
Easterns.
De Wet and most probably David Townsend might be the
unfortunate ones bowling-wise, as
Titans coach Dave Nosworthy is expected to feild Smith,
who has just come off an ankle
injury, Mulligan George, Pierre Joubert and Steve
Elworthy.
However, the Titans coach did not want to be drawn into
team speculation before Monday
when he finalises the side after inspecting the Kingsmead
pitch.
Prelimary squad: Alviro Petersen, Johan Rudolph, Martin
van Jaarsveld, Johan Myburgh, Neil
McKenzie, Gerald Dros (captain), Pierre Joubert, Kruger
van Wyk, Shafiek Abrahams, Steve
Elworthy, Mulligan George, David Townsend, Greg Smith,
Friedel de Wet. - Sapa
