Neighborhood Watch 60411-16th Place & Scott Avenue
MAY 2002

WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE!

WHO WE ARE
Our Neighborhood Watch consists of all residents who live within a one block radius of 16th Place and Scott Avenue.

So, if you live on 16th Place between Ashland and Wilson......or Scott Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets you are in our Neighborhood Watch territory.

ABOUT THIS SITE
This site will post information and notices concerning our neighborhood. This does not replace the monthly meetings.

All area neighbors are welcome!

OUR PURPOSE
Our Neighborhood Watch was established in August 2001 with two goals in mind:

1. To provide a means of communication amongst the residents so we can have a community of people who know each other as neighbors and friends.

2. To establish an awareness of what's going on in our neighborhood so that, as citizens, we can work with each other and our local police to make our neighborhood a safe and respectable place to live.

WHEN:    1ST SATURDAY EACH MONTH
                 3:00PM

--------------------------------------

CHICAGO HEIGHTS POLICE DEPT.
We are very fortunate to have a PRO-ACTIVE police force, under the leadership of Chief-of-Police Robert Pinnow. He & his staff do work WITH us, helping to resolve neighborhood problems, patroling our area, maintaining peace and order. As a reminder, a Hispanic-speaking police officer usually attends our meetings.

NEXT MEETING: SAT.-JUNE 2, 2002

LAST MEETING: MAY 4TH, THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH AWARENESS EVENT

A great success thanks to everyone who participated.  "Newcomers" from beyond the Neighborhood Watch area came. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH IS EXPANDING! The Neighborhood Watch Map will be revised again. Please be patient.

Many thanks to Chicago Heights' Mayor Angelo Ciambrone; Dominic Candeloro, Asst. to the Mayor; Chief-of-Police Robert Pinnow, his wife Dolly and his officers and detectives; the Park District; the Hummels, the Carbajals; and everyone who help make this event a great success! There's talk about a summer get together!

Chief Pinnow introduced his officers & detectives.  A brief meeting was held and the following was discussed:

We are reminded that this is OUR neighborhood, not just one person's.

We all have the same concerns and need to share in the responsibility of keeping it safe.

We all should continue to be alert and responsive when notifying our neighbors and the police.

The issue of Neighborhood Watch organizing activities for the children was brought up. The function of Neighborhood Watch (stated above) is not for this purpose. The proper authorities and/or organizations who are in the position and have liability insurance should be contacted, such as the Park District.

Acknowledgements of individuals were made.

Neighborhood Watch area is growing, expanding to 17th and 16th Streets. Neighbors are needed as point-person(s) from each block. This will help will the flow of communication.

Neighborhood Volunteer Litter-Control begins this month. Every Tuesday starting May 7th. Children need signed Parental Permission forms before they can participate. See GiGi for a form. Snack rewards to those who participate. An adult volunteer will supervise. ALL ADULT NEIGHBORS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE. Contact GiGi Monaco to help with supervision. Snack contributions are welcome too!

Meet at the corner of 16th Place & Scott. Children must bring plastic bags for trash. Disposable plastic gloves available. Children/adults may bring their own gloves.

Area of Clean-up: 16th Place (between Ashland & Wilson) / Scott (between 16th & 17th Streets)
If neighbors from 16th and 17th Streets want to get involved, adult volunteers from these streets are needed.

--------------------------------------

SUMMER'S JUST AROUND THE CORNER
School will be out soon. Neighbors with children are asked to be aware of your children's whereabouts.

Some kids from other neighborhoods come into our area, whether passing through or visiting friends, have been known to cause problems, anywhere from swearing-to-threats-to-property damage-to-physical harm (rocks thrown). The neighbors of Neighborhood Watch will NOT tolerate this kind of behavior, nor another summer like last year.

PLEASE BECOME FAMILIAR WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS, ADULTS AND THEIR CHILDREN.

TALK TO THEM, GET TO KNOW WHO YOUR NEIGHBORS ARE.

--------------------------------------

VISIBILITY IS KEY
It's important to be seen outside the home too. People, kids or adults, do not loiter as much when residents are present.

--------------------------------------

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PATROL
Under the guise of a NEIGHBORHOOD WALKING CLUB, we can accomplish 3 goals:

1) Excercise
2) Visibility: see/meet neighbors and they see us
3) Patrol/Monitor the area, especially late aftn/early eve.

We should start this asap. Some folks are up for it already. Contact GiGi.
