The Elliot Lillien Award

Given annually to the fencer that best embodies sportsmanship, good will, and an excellent parry system.

Elliot Lillien was head coach at Brown University from 1988-1994. During that time, Brown grew from a club team into a full varsity program. Perhaps Elliot's greatest accomplishment in this process was to make certain his team never lost sight of the sportsmanship and ideals that make fencing a noble sport. When Elliot retired as coach of Brown he took up the reins of league commissioner for a few years. In 1999, the Friends of Brown Fencing created this award in his honor. At the end of the season, the coaches of teams in the league each nominate one fencer from their respective team that best represents the ideals Elliot stood for. The decision is made by the coaches of the league and has been described as the feel-good moment of the season.
