I've typed up some stratagies I've learned since I started playing Halo.  Feel free to add more on my messgae board.
First off, get to know the weps in Halo.  My favorite wep combos are the shot gun and the pistol. The shot gun packs quite a punch from close to medium range, but does pratically no damage in the long distance shots. This is were your pistol comes in. NEVER ever EVER underestimate your trusty pistol. 2 or 3 well placed head shots will down a enemy in no time, and it more then makes up for the shot gun's loss of range. Don't forget to use the scope, and as I mentioned before, aim for the head. I would recomend keeping the pistol as a secondary wep with any combo (but that's just me)
Master Chief, in all his glory
Another good weapon to have, is the assualt rifle and the sniper rifle.  While the assualt rifle doesn't pack the punch of the shot gun, it is useful for keeping your opponet's shields down with a hail of bullets. (It's not the most accurate gun, so it usually takes a whole clip to down your foe, also, like the shot gun, it's almost usless at longe ranges. A good startegy to practice, is to empty a clip in your opponent, and then melee attack when your on empty. Unless your opponent has a overshield, that usually does the trick.
Now to the sniper rifle:  I'll tell it straight up, I SUCK at sniping. Some obvious things I can point out though are: 1). Find a place to hide.  Don't try sniping out in the middle of Blood Gulch. Charge a scropion with your melee attack, if your that dumb. Get out of site and out of mind. Keep in mind though, no matter how well you're hidden, someone sooner or later, will see the tracer of your SR, and spy you, which brings me to number 2). When you  take a 1 or 2 shots, scope out, and look around take make sure no one is sneaking up on you to stick your butt with a plasma grenade.  You will probably also want to move around the map from hiding spot to hiding spot, so that no one will get the better of you. If your good at sniping, stick with it! A good sniper is invalueable to a team. Escpecially with vehicleslike the Scropion or the Warthog. 3).  Don't forget your pistol. Unlike the SR, the pistol doesn't have a tracer, and if your  a fancy shot, your opponent will be down before he knows what hit him.  The pistol has just a bit shorter range then the SR, so for maps like Blood Gulch, you may want to use the SR.
Most of the other weps I don't care that much for...the Plasma Pistol is a poor damage inducer, although the melee attack is pretty fast. The over charge is O.K. for confined areas , but just doesn't cut it in the spacier maps.  The Plasma Rifle is better then the PP, but it still doesn't dish out the pain like the shot gun or the human pistol. Also, it has a tendency to overheat at the worst times. The  Needler may seem real pretty, but pretty's not gonna save your butt out on the battle field now is it? Don't be fooled by the "tracking" feature...that only works if your opponent is stupid enough to stand still while you empty 80 neetles into him. Also, the melee attack is horribly slow. Use this wep if you must, in hallways or when your opponent's back is to you. On the plus side, it IS disturbingly fun to see your nemesis blow up in a rainbow of smoke. ;-)
One weapon that I give it's own category, is the Rocket Launcher. Be afraid, be very afraid...
1).This a a great vehicle buster. It's good to take out Warthogs, Scropions and Ghosts, usually with a single shot, but 2).MAKE YOUR FIRST SHOT COUNT. Even if you have 2 shots before you have to reload, it still takes a couple of seconds between shot 1 and shot 2.  The RL has a terribly slow reload, so I would recommend switching weapons and reloading after it's all clear. 3).Please remember, this baby is not a shot gun, so when you blow your own head off in a hallway, don't come cryin to me to scape it off the wall. The RL can be as dangerous to you as your enemies if not used properly. If your not sure which way to hold it, put it down, and walk away.  Even though the idea of bashing someone with a rocket launcher seems cool, I wouldn't recommend it, as the recover time is almost as slow as the reload.
