NeeWah's Dance Troupe

"NeeWah", the GrosVentre word for "Grandmother" is in reference to MaryAgnes BlackCrow, founder and grandmother of the NeeWah's Dance Troupe.

The Dance Troupe consists of grandchildren of Joe "Fiddles" and MaryAgnes BlackCrow from Hays, Montana which is located on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. These children have been performing for local schools and functions in and around Montana for over seven years. Three of the grandgirls have been past powwow princesses. The troupe has traveled extensively with the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Mary Agnes raised 6 of her 8 grandchildren and makes their dance outfits for them. She has three grown son's and one daughter, which help her with the troupe to travel to various powwows throughout Montana.

Before the children dance, they say the Lord's Prayer in their native language, GrosVentre.

THE LORD'S PRAYER (GROS-VENTRE)

Ashley

Little Curly Hair GrosVentre Girl

I am a Fancy Shawl dancer. I'm a very good crow hopper and a very good all around dancer which means that I like to dance as a fancy shawl dancer, a teen girls traditional, and teen girls jingle dress dancer. I take a lot of pride in my dancing, especially if we have to teach some kids on how to dance. I really like that. My grandma sews and makes my Indian outfits and sometimes I kind of design my own. The colors in my outfit are red, white, and black.

Bridgette

Makes Holy Woman

I'm a Jingle dress dancer. I have been dancing for over 7 years. I was a Hays Community Powwow Princess for one year. My dress is made from Copenhagen tops and my dress is made from different colors.

Cameron

White Animal

I am a Junior Boys Traditional dancer. I'm a very good traditional dancer with the crow hop step. I take pride in my dancing, my family, my dance suit, and my elders. My grandma makes and sews my dancing outfit except for the bustle, the fox fur, and the roach. The traditional way of wearing the bustle is that you have to earn it. I earned my bustle by dancing in Washington, DC.

Thorne

Weasel Moccasin

I'm a boy's Traditional dancer and I'm a very good dancer. I'm a very serious dancer because I use eagle feathers and I have to be very careful with them because our tradition is we cannot drop our feathers. My grandmother designs and makes my suit. It takes alot of time to make a suit. I wear an animal head piece (coyote). When I was little, I always liked coyotes.

Brenda

Grass Woman

I'm a Jingle dress dancer, I'm a very good "side stepper". I take pride in all of my dancing. My mom designs my dress in both colors of blue and purple. I live off the reservation, but I'm still learning my traditional way of life. I'm the top of my class in all of my subjects. My class enjoys it when I go into my school to dance for Native American Day. My mom teaches me my Jingle Dress steps. I don't carry a fan because we chose not to use the fan. I wear one french braid with beaded barrettes. I also wear rings on both hands. I'm an enrolled GrosVentre, I am also a descendant of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

Talita

Weasel Woman

I am a Junior Girls Traditional dancer. My suit is very traditional. I wear a traditional cape on what they used to wear back in the old days. I also wear a big breastplate that goes around my neck and hangs down to my knees. The colors in my suit are blue, yellow, white and red.
