Vincente Martinez Ybor,
Founder
Ybor, who was born in Valencia, Spain in 1818, immigrated to Cuba at the age of 14, where he went from selling cigars in a grocery store to directing a cigar factory by the time he was 35.

Do you know how Ybor City got its name? Well, way back in 1885, Don Vincente Martinez Ybor purchased 40 acres of land to relocate his Key West cigar factory to what we now know as Ybor City. But he wasn't alone. Along with im came Gavino Gutierrez, a businessman in search of a place to grow guava for his produce business, Ignacio Haya, owner of a New York cigar factory, also decided to settle to the area. Three three men developed a community, workforce and lifestyle that created a foundation for not only Ybor, but also Tampa Bay. Ybor City (pronounced EE-bore) is a world unto itself. You'll find it nestled close in the midst of Tampa; but you'll feel its soul reaches way beyond the redbrick roads. Its dimly dit streets are laden with rich tales of a time when different cultures worked and thrived together and created a community called
YBOR.
