on style

'When writing scripts, it's important to follow the rules.
Otherwise your unconscious has too much room to try
to be liked.' - David Mamet
. If you think there is a style
to which you must conform, it's likely to harm your work. Concentrate on the meaning of your content and many
style issues will resolve themselves. It is bad practice to
write something without really understanding it. It is worse
to imagine you understand more than you do. When a point seems thorny, either have someone else explain it to you or try explaining it to yourself out loud. Speech will often be a quick route to a clear and intelligible passage of writing. But

more than that...
I was asked to write this text as training material to accompany the style guide when I was a senior writer and editor at Wide Learning. It appeared in almost exactly the same form as it does here on the company intranet.
