William EASTERLING
Birth: ABT. 1795 in Russell Co., Virginia Death: MAY 1880 in Morgan Co., Virginia
Note: William Easterling son of Thomas Easterling and Rebecca Vicers, was born and reared in Russell County, VA. Evidently, he started his married life in VA for census records reveal that Walter E. Easterling, a son of William, was born there in 1818. This census also reveals that there was one child (unnamed) who was older than Walter E. with a probable date of birth of 1816. From this data, one can assume that William married his wife, Susannah Elam, about 1815 in VA and that he lived there until about 1818 or later. William and his two brothers, Henry and Thomas Jr., all sons of Thomas Easterling of Russell Co., VA married three Elam sisters,Susannah, Fancina, and Joannah, daughters of Walter Elam and Nancy Raines (Ranze,Reigns?) of Morgan Co., KY Thomas Easterling's daughter, Mary E. (Polly) Easterling, also married an Elam. Her husband, Nimrod Elam, was a nephew of Walter Elam and the son of William and Susannah Elam of Scott Co., VA. Walter Elam, the father-in-law of William, Henry and Thomas Easterling, lived in Scott and Russell counties of Virginia and apparently knew the Easterlings prior to moving to Morgan Co.,KY. It is known that Walter Elam moved to Morgan Co. in 1818,and it is probable that William Easterling and family accompanied him or came shortly thereafter. Henry and Thomas, William's brothers, both married in Morgan Co.,--Henry in 1820and Thomas in 1824. It is probable that William preceded them to KY and with the help of his father-in-law, Walter Elam, assisted his brothers in finding suitable farm land in MorganCo. The Easterling farms were near West Liberty, Morgan Co.,KY. The Elam family trace their lineage to a Robert Elam who patented land in Chesterfield Co., VA in 1638. Five generations later, Walter Elam moved from Chesterfield Co., to Russell County, VA and thence to Morgan Co., KY. The name"Elam" is English Canterbury, Kent County, England. Elham isprobably a contraction of Elmham, meaning a village of Elams.William Easterling married Susannah Elam about 1815. Both William and Susannah were born in 1795 and died within a year of each other--Susannah in August 1879 and William in May 1880.William and Susannah had at least twelve children.
