Help guide for newbie Rangers- By Starwind

This guide was made with my recent adventure from level 1 to 19 in a week :D. Rangers rock hard and solid when used effectively, but learning them from the start is a bit confusing now and I'm here to enlighten the newbie race to how to play a ranger effectively.

Race- Half-elfs are the only race that can have Gigantic wolf/dog and all other races can get Enormous. Getting started in general-
Getting started as a ranger means knowing all that you can do as a ranger. Some important notes. Alias is going to be a big thing for you, as you will alias all your main commands (unless you use a client that lets you make buttons for the F keys like zmud :D). Alias the following, Skin corpse, carve corpse, gut corpse, pluck corpse. These commands will let you skin a corpse for pelts, carve meat from it, and gut sinews from it (stringy stuff used to make rope or whatever else you can braid). Pluck will pluck feathers from birds, so make sure you do this before carving or gutting, otherwise the feathers will be ruined.
Aside from that, you will want to decide what weapon you want to work up, a primary weapon if you would. Rangers do good with all weapons so basically it's how you want to play. Shortswords and knifes go up pretty fast, but Longswords and 2 handed axes deliver more damage. It's still up to how you want to play. Once you decide what weapon you want to use throughout your begining stage, stick with it. I don't offer weapon evals on my site, but there are sites where the weapon eval of a good weapon to use at what skill level out there. You can always ask a fighter to eval you with your weapons too.
Now we have our primary idea on what weapon to use and we know how to deal with corpses, lets move on with foraging. Foraging is a nice little bonus. when you go out in the fields, type forage to get a listing of what's in the surrounding area. i.e
forage
Inspecting the area, you determine that the following can be found here:
Some food.
There's some food here, now type gather food to try and get some food.
gather food
You search for a while and find a cluster of berries.
mmm berries. Now you can do some things with these delicious berries. You can eat them strait, or get a copper tubing and a bottle and go to a campfire and distill it. I'll explain distilling later on. Either way, this is an example of foraging. Good for emergency heals when out in the middle of nowhere.

Wolfs/dogs-
Ok, the best thing is the pets, so lets get this out of the way. You can tame wolves and dogs you find out in the game to become your pet. Taming any wolf that's Large or lower can become bondable. Dogs can be bondable too. Wisdom helps determine the size of wolf you can tame. The higher the Wisdom the bigger the wolf. If you don't want a bonded wolf but a wolf to your wis, I know there's a site out there with wolf listing that are tamable at what wis, but alas, you have to find it, I'm basically going over commands here.
Commands: Tame ( help tame gives a good detail listing that might help if I don't cover something) When you go to tame a wolf/dog, simply make sure you have 50 sps and type tame wolf. or dog. Once you have the wolf tamed, you need to give it a name. Be aware! When you name your wolf type name wolfsname. wolfsname being the name you want it to be. ******DON'T!***** I repeat, don't type name wolf wolfsname. You just named it wolf... And my condolences if you did this already. But just name wolfsname will work.
Basic commands: Kill- To have your wolf attack, first point at the creature you want it to kill. After it looks at it, type say wolfsname kill. After that your wolf will attack (be aware that wolfname should be replaced with the wolf's actuall name) Once your wolf starts attacking, you should assist it. Type assist wolfsname. You will then assist your wolf and you two will double team the creature you are working on.
Lie- say wolfsname lie
This will tell your wolf to lie down. Doing this will help it heal better. *note* Binding wolf will help heal your wolf faster if it's full. Also, try and keep your wolf full when you first start out. the longer it goes without food, the more in likely it will go feral. Come- say wolfsname come
This will tell your wolf to forget what it was doing and follow you. This works to break the guard command and also if it's lieing down.
Speak- say wolfsname speak
This will have your wolf start barking. This will also break the command hush.
Hush- say wolfsname hush
This will silence your wolf from barking out at random. If you wind up playing stars or trivia, this is good to do while in the room with your wolf
Stay- say wolfsname stay
Your wolf will stay.
Carry- say wolfsname carry
Point at the object you want your wolf to carry and it will look at it and then give the command. Wolves/dogs will only carry after they finish or almost done shedding. So basically at Large. This command also helps you work on the Str stat. Best way to carry is get a pack/sack and fill it with empty bottles/beer. Have the wolf carry what she can carry. Take bottles out till it can start to pick it up. If it fails to lift her head, then it needs to be lighten up. Graddam can help teach your wolf to carry if you want it to get better *keep from slipping out of it's mouth*
Guard- say wolfsname guard
Point at the object you want your wolf to guard. do the command and it will guard This will only work if your wolf/dog is at very large stage of growth. Ferrier helps train guard.
Rescue- say wolfsname rescue me
This will have your wolf rescue you in battle. Do the command when you are getting attacked and your wolf will rescue you. This will only work if your wolf/dog is at Huge stage. Marika teaches your pet to rescue.
*note* there may be other commands I have not mentioned but those are for you to find, some fun ones I know I forgot but they're not worth mentioning, just play around.*

Distilling-
Distilling is nifty thing you can do with all the stuff you gathered. Forest Herbs can be used to make medicine, one of the best heals in the game. Fruits can be turned into delicious daiqris or wines or other alcholic beverages. Whiteleaf can be distilled into essence. Whiteleaf and essence will do some wierd stuff to you, as it's the games' drug of choice. Use at your own risk or become a whiteleaf junkie.
How to distill- Commands are as follow when you get a copper tubing (tinker sells). attach bottle(or jar) distill item (item being the item you wish to distill, i.e distill herbs) detach newitem (newitem being the new item that is distilled, i.e. detach medicine) You need a copper tubing, fire, and a bottle/jar for this and the item you wish to distill.
Cooking- Another thing beside the meat you collect that can be cooked, is all the fruit you find and other food like items. Cooking them will increase their healing values. Try cooking anything you find out there. You'll make pies, tarts and some delcious roots.
Bedrolls- Another good heal to have around is a bedroll. You need 100 feathers and alot of pelts (10 I think but some pelts like large pelt qualify for like 5) Just make bedroll and wala, you have a bedroll you can unroll, drop , and sleep in. Tents/Shelters- Something I found very handy, especially if you go guildless, is a shelter or tent. To build them, read help build. You can go out into the fields and forage for wood, and then cut beams needed. If you can't carry them all, take your beams to the spot you want to build at and then go back for the rest. Make sure you have enough sinew and pelts and then build tent/shelter. Tents need to be repaired more, but shelters are good quality. You can also conceal your shelter so no one can see it, unless they search.
Ranger made weapons- Rangers can also make weapons on their own, so if caught after reboot, you can just go out and make you a weapon. To make staffs, you need to forage for wood. Once you find wood, type cut staff. To make a spear, take your staff you cut to a fire, (ranger camp is good place for finding a permanent fire) and sharpen staff. This will either burn the staff up or sharpen it to a spear. To make a bow, forage for yew. cut bowstave and then string bow. requires 1 sinew. I will not teach you to use bow here, that's up to you, and I might add that in a later section.
Build your own fire- You can build your own fire by foraging for wood and cutting firewood. Once you have enough wood, and a flint *forage for flint and gather flint* you can build fire. To keep your fire going, add more wood to it, add wood. (Side note, you can cut wood better if you have an axe with you. Get less can't find any decent wood messages.)
There are some other fun stuff you can do that I didn't mention, but not really imporant to mention. But once you get going, you'll find them on your own.

So now you know what to do with corpses and what commands to use with your wolf/dog but now you're wondering how to start? Well, I can give you these fine pointers. Use them as you would and grow on them.
1. Sylvanthic pups are famous for being one of the best wolves around to raise. The Large pup you can pet as soon as you tame it, it's pretty nice, but word has it the small pup has the best potential. I will not disclose directions, but suggest you get a Higher level ranger to help you get there to tame one. Just do a who class. And if you see me on, most of the time, I'll be willing to help you get one. (OK that's a lie now. I'm a mage due to personal reason. But if you see me around, I also venture back to Rangers with Contrail or Stoutblade)
2. Meat supply is hard to maintain at low levels. Remeber that you can buy meat as well. Some good places that are nuetral grounds for all guilds is Dermott (fish) and the butcher in Neville (13n 3 e 3 n 2 w n). Additional grounds to find meat is Misha in Nepeth, Andeli Castle shop, if other rangers sold meat there, and even check the hobbitat shop. You can always take up fishing as well.
3. Experience. The best way to gain experience is to kill peltable creatures and save up your pelts. I recommend making a pack and a sack as soon as you get enough pelts. Use the pack to hold your pelts *make aliases to put all pelt in pack and to take all pelt from pack* and put all your meat in the sack *also make aliases for this as well* Once you save up enough pelts, go to a shop, take out all your pelts and start making tons of pouches. Sell them all off and you'll get xp and gold. Also with the sinew, braid ropes. I also recommend using the keep command to keep all the equipment you don't want to sell, that way you can do an alias for sell all and sell all the items you have that's not in keep. *read help keep for more details in the game*
4. Meat going bad. Keep your meat from going bad by using salt. You can forage for this out in the fields or just buy it from Dermot or the tinker. Command is salt meat.
5. Cook your meat. Get you a frying pan and cook your meat. It makes your wolf/dog sturdier.
6. Raising stats on wolfs- To check your wolfs stats, observe it. Observe is a nice little command that lets you compare creatures, even players. What you're looking for is something along the lines of : She appears to be well-toned, moves with practiced ease and is sturdy.
The first part where well-toned is, that's the str. These are max values too. moves with practiced ease is dex, and sturdy is con. To raise it's str, just have it carry, *have to wait till it's large* If you need to work dex, just have it tank alot on creatures that might give it some pain, but keep an eye on your wolf and don't let it go past hurt.(This is something else I found out too. If you bash with a high quality tank, your wolf's dex will increase that way as well. The main thing to remeber is to "STAY ACTIVE" with your wolf. Idling alot can also effect your wolf negatively. I had a wolf shrink cause I idled way too much.) To work con, just keep it fed. Cooked meat works best for this and it's an easy stat to raise. The other two become a pain though.
In this guide, you have been given the best tips, advice and commands that should help you start rangering better. My last piece of advice is to buy a large map from Hana and buy medicinals from fredd. The map, you can learn how the world looks while you travel and find your way around easier. The medicinals will help heal your pet faster by binding it's wounds. Pets have a higher healing rate than players so bind wounds of petsname to bind its wounds when you have medicinals. If you get lost in the fields and have no idea where you are, Tell lorius lost and he'll try and get you back to tant Or check your bearings by typing bearing. Any more advice, you should pick up a carving 2 south of the inn where you start and start talking to everyone on the newbie line.
This guide was created to guide new rangers with the basics to building up. Main componets of the game not mentioned such as player stat raising and other stuff that relates to all classes are not mentioned. This is condesned and will probably be added on to with request from other rangers needing to know more or wish to see more details over a certain topic mentioned here. Send emails to [email protected] to get new stuff posted or leave any comments regarding this information.
