Frequently Asked Questions ?

Find below answers to the most commonly asked questions about this site, which have been e-mailed to me.

Q: Where exactly is 'Deepest, Darkest South Wiltshire' ?

A: Actually it's Salisbury, Wiltshire's only true city with 404 ft of reasons to prove it !

Q: How were the drum tracks recorded ?

A: To be honest, being a bassist first and guitarist a poor second , the drums and bass element of the songs to me are very important and are written quite early in the writing process. I use the Korg DDD-1 to write the drum track (basically because I'm use to using it) and when I'm happy with it, the midi info is dumped into Jazz (a midi sequencer) where it forms the backbone for the songs development. Then this in turn is used, after maybe a bit of tweaking, to drive various pieces of outboard to obtain the sounds for recording to a wave file within N-Track.

Q: Is the Nearly Men a band or a solo project ?

A: Well actually it's both or to be more candid it was ! The Nearly Men was a real band, with various line ups which played quite a few gigs, but alas never made it as such, although various members have had some success in their own projects. The one common factor to all these groups was yours truly, and it's my home demos of the songs, which are published on this site. Though to be truthful this site isn't just for me, it's for all the ex band members as bit of fun so that we can all have our 5 minutes of fame !

Q: Did the Nearly Men ever legitimately release any recordings on vinyl or CD ?

A: No, well Nearly ! A song written by myself and Frogg (the Nearly Keyboard wizard) did turn up on Frogg's soundtrack album to his 'Jack The Ripper' musical project which was released on CD (go to the links page for more information on this).

Q: Apart from XTC and The Stranglers what else has influenced the Nearly Men ?

A: Drink and lots of it ! Other groups well there has to be the following Big Country, The Buzzcocks, the Oysterband, Jacques Brel (can't understand a word of French, but my God it's good stuff), B-Movie, and a multitude of one hit wonders who've re-inspired me as I've gone along.

Q: Is music your fulltime occupation ?

A: No, It's just a bit of Fun in my spare time.

Q: Do you play any Gigs ?

A: The last gig played was 5 years ago supporting Hugh Cornwell (from the Stranglers) and since then there's been no live work, I've kind of lost the urge and besides I can't stand rehearsing !

Q: Why use N-Track instead of say Cubase etc ?

A: It's cheap, it's easy to use and has all the features I require (same goes for Jazz), why pay for things you don't want or need ?

Q: What plug-ins do you use ?

A: Anything and everything that I can lay my hands on, again most of them come as freebies off magazine CD's or the web, but I should mention use of Jezar's 'Freeverb' which has to be one of the best freebies ever (go to the links page for more information on this).
