TWIN KILLING FOR LOS ALTOS

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS TWIN KILLING FOR LOS ALTOS FAIR SISTERS HELP EAGLES ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND DATE: Wednesday, February 16, 1994 Section: SECTION: Sports Edition: Morning Final Page: 3D DAVID KIEFER, Special to the Mercury News Memo: CCS SOCCER PLAYOFFS ROUNDUP

Lorrie Fair calls it a "psychic connection."

Ronnie Fair says it's "a twin thing."

Whatever it's called, there's a special line of communication between Los Altos soccer players and twin sisters Lorrie and Ronnie Fair. One always seems to know where the other is on the field, which helps explain the second goal in the Eagles' 2-0 Central Coast Section Division II first-round playoff victory Tuesday over visiting Notre Dame-San Jose.

Ronnie, moving up from her sweeper position, sent a pass into an open area that only Lorrie could reach, and she did midway through the second half for the clinching goal, Lorrie's second of the match.

''Sometimes, I don't even have to look," Lorrie said. "And I know where she is."

But there's far more to their game than apparent telepathy. The Fairs are excellent players, as Notre Dame discovered.

Lorrie plays forward and Ronnie sweeper, but each sophomore possesses outstanding skills, touch, and speed to befuddle defenders and keep them on their heels.

In one sequence Tuesday, Lorrie was surrounded by four defenders, but a feint and change of direction allowed her to turn and sprint through the defense with a long dribble.

Ronnie, too, got into the act by intercepting a pass deep in the defensive zone. Rather than boot the ball upfield - common for a sweeper - she dribbled the ball back the other way, coast-to-coast.
