D - Units of the NDRT
National Disaster Response Team

National Disaster Response Team

This Page is to give you a complete understanding of "D" Designated Units of the NDRT are. What they are intended for, Thier mission responsibilities, and why they are needed.

As stated previously on this site, the NDRT has taken a new approach to disaster response. We intend to provide you, the first responder and victim of a disaster with the best possible and most complete services that will help and assist with saving lives and starting the road of recovery. A feat that was completed through research on many levels. First of which was a focus on types of disasters, disaster damage, equipment used, supplies used, and what failed. Onther level was the same but with what worked. Yet another dealt with obsticles, focusing on what equipment was best and what was wasn't to deal with thoses obsticles.
As we learned from the research, we began to see some patterns and problems with some of the equipment in Search and Rescue missions, Supply and Support missions and more. So to correct these problems the NDRT had to break down the problems to the basics then reasearch many possible solutions for them.

Example: There are two types of organizations out there for Disaster Response and they are Tactical and Support. Tactical is Search and Rescue, Fire Fighting, Medical Treatment, Evacuation and such. Support is Food and Water distribution, Supply Distribution, Shelter / Housing, Clean up and more.

Though each is exceptionally important in each of thier areas, Communications, mission parameters and more become increasing stretched with each addition unit, organization, Etc. that arrives.

So what would be a logical solution to this? Remember when Hurricane Katrina happened? When the US Military stepped in, things began to happen, people who where left stranded without food and water or help, where suddenly getting that help. Why? Why did it take the Military to fix what should have taken care of by the Agencies and Organizations there? It's simple, "To many Cooks in the kitchen"

Our research shows that organizations that combine both Tactical and Support can provide better care and assistance during the Initial Phases of a disaster and here is why. Tactical Organizations are designed to get in help people, property, animals and get out. Support organizations are designed to go in afterwards and provide the supplies and serve the needs of the long term. What is missing there is an Organization that provides both.

By providing both Tactical and Support in one, The needs of the victims and first responders are met while other more *specialized* organizations are able to arrive and set-up.

The NDRT was created for that specific reason and to complete that mission, new vehicle and trailer designs where implemented. Each for a specific task that when operating as a whole benefits those around them and adds a step to the completion of the job. Save lives and help start the Road to Recovery.
