The Favorite Couple
By : J. Helios
I hate
parties. I avoid them as much as possible. Especially parties with dancing. I
hate dancing. It’s not that I don’t know how to dance,
I just…don’t like to dance with most of the people who are offering. I thought
I had an ally of sorts when I saw Leonheart staring
at the dome again. He wasn’t dancing. Sure he was walking around, but Hyne, that
changed with the hand Ms. Heartily offered him.
But Hyne, they do make a cute couple.
Quiet,
brooding and almost boring. Smiley, friendly and definitely
girlfriend material. They’re both weird so they deserve each other.
Some
waltz is playing and I roll my eyes. The Waltz to the Moon.
Everyone is basically on the dance floor, waltzing away this stupid SeeD ball. Everyone except you and me.
I look at you from across the table and you pretend to watch the stars. You
tuck a stray strand of hair behind an ear as you sneak a peek at the dancers
and back to me.
I
restrain a sigh as I watch the dancers as well. My eyes keep on making their
way back to Leonheart and Heartily. I realize rather
belatedly, a lot of other people were watching them as well.
“If
there was an award” I hear you speak and I turn to look at you, “for the cutest
couple, or something like that. They would win it” you nod your head in their
general direction.
I
snort. “Yeah, they deserve each other” they’re both weird, I repeat under my
breath.
You
just shrug. Hyne, you’re looking at them and back at
me again. It takes all I have to stop rolling my eyes.
I look
at you again. I’d be a fool if I didn’t admit you’re beautiful tonight, Hyne, you’re beautiful every night I see you. It’s as if
the night makes you all the more ethereal. So unreal, like a
moonbeam. A
moonbeam who wants to dance.
I hide
another sigh and stand up. Walking to your side of the table, I feel your eyes
on me, trying to decipher what I wanted. With the best smile I could come up
with, I hold out my hand and nod to the general direction of the dance floor.
“Want to see if we could give them a run for the money?”
You
smile and leave me breathless again. That smile told me everything. You’ve been
waiting for this.
I hold
you close for this dance and I smile softly to myself. True, you’re taller than
me. You’re maybe the ball’s most beautiful flower but I am not someone you’d
like to bring home to meet the parents. I’m a horrible dancer,
you flit from one step to the other. We may not be able to make showy dance
moves or look absolutely adorable. But did you know?
You and
me, we’re my favorite couple.
